In 1857 there was gold discovered in the lower Fraser valley. The following year tons of miners came and joined the gold rush in BC. The first Chinese immigrants were from San Francisco. They arrived in BC by boat in June 1858. Later on more Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong came to the “gold mountain” to seek a better life. Canadian also added 50 dollars tax for each Chinese person, the average Chinese labourers  could earn 225 dollars a YEAR, after buying food, clothing... they would only have 43 dollars left in average.

The tax also went up to 100 dollars in 1901, and to 500 dollars in 1903, that is a very big jump between 1901 and 1903.

When Chinese people arrived, the Canadians will check whether if they have money or not, if not, they would have to call a friend to pay for them immediately.
