The Single Note

Ben Ratliff's position on the importance of the single note is that a single note being played over and over and over again can remove the effect that repetition has on you during the piece. Sometimes, repetition can cause the listener of a piece to doze into thought with the repetition being the background music, and the dozing dream being the new and non-repetitive portions of the piece. A single note can be the revolving part of a huge breakthrough in the story line that the piece is trying to convey. If the listener is placed in the musical trance that repetition puts one in, the composer or artist can remove that trance by placing a note that starts a revolution such as an alarm clock. While the brain tries to focus on the motion of the piece, the single note brings the listener back to "square one" so-to-speak. Take "Thelonious" by Thelonious Monk as an example. In this piece, a single note is played with revolving notes that climb up and down and attempt to complete phrases. The phrases can never be completed, however, because the revolving note is too agitating to the listener. This is the note that pulls you out of your trance while listening. Another example of this is in "Funeral March" by Chopin. Two single notes are exemplified in this piece. A sharp and C sharp are continuously played with very little pause. This forces the reader to figure out the meaning of the notes.
