After reading the poem "O Me! O Life!" by Walt Whitman, I more clearly see a different perspective on life. Whitman explains in the poem how in life you may be surrounded by "foolish" people, and you may or may not be the same as them, just a person who wants to get more out of life then what you are getting right now. This poem relates greatly to the movie "Dead Poets' Society" in the way it explains the characters. The main character in the film has very strict parents who do not permit him to go outside his comfort zone and try new things, which relates to the poem by Whitman. Neil wants to get more out of life than what his dad wants and he believes that his verse will be taking up his love for acting. Even though in the end his verse does not work out, he still decided to go ahead and "crave the light" he desires. I believe that Whitman is correct and that people should never be treated the way Neil was treated in the film. Anyone should be able to be who they want to be and express themselves without feeling judged by anyone.
