The American Association of College of Nursing has ten essential domains, competencies, and subcompetencies for nursing (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2021). Domain eight addresses Informatics and Healthcare technologies (AACN, 2021). Graduates of Master of Science in Nursing programs must adhere to these guidelines. Encompassing evidence base practice, mitigating risk, awareness of financial impacts, and workflow processes (AACN, 2021). Additionally, utilization of data, and communication tools to support care. Furthermore, use of health information technology to provider safe care while mitigating security risks (AACN, 2021). Evaluation of the impact on healthcare team members and patients should be assessed (AACN, 2021). Lastly ethical, legal, and professional criterion should be accounted for (AACN, 2021). These specifications provide the advanced practice nurse tools in which to provider care based on best practice.

Advanced practice nurse informaticists will collect and validate data in order to identify opportunities and promote effective use of health information technology (ANA, 2015). Informatics nurse specialist will obtain and keep current professional certification in informatics (ANA, 2015). 

Standard number fifteen resource utilization. Informatics nurses employ resources that are safe, effective, and fiscally responsible (ANA, 2015). Opportunities for harm are identified, allocation of resources of evaluated, advocation of supporting technology, and assisting patients and care providers are encompassed within this standard (ANA, 2015). Additionally, the advanced practice nurse informaticist will utilized community resources, formulate solutions, and design strategies for effectiveness and optimal outcomes (ANA, 2015).

With all the changes always happening in technology, an update to the scope and standard of Nursing Informatics should be incorporating more machine learning or supporting artificial intelligence programs.  In the article in Nursing Management, Robert talks about how machine learning is when a computer uses a program for a specific task, and then the computer will use an algorithm to learn from the data and interpret it (2019).  As robots learn to perform nursing functions, such as ambulation support, vital signs measurement, medication administration, and infectious disease protocols, the role of nurses in care delivery will change (Robert, 2019).
