CONFLICT

The main conflict in The Land of the Dead took place when Odysseus had to witness pain, loss, and bloodshed for the sake of getting back home. "From every side, they came and sought the pit with rustling cries" (Homer, line 569). In this context, Homer is explaining the amount of grief and mourning caused by the death and blood of many people and animals. This tension impacts the story by portraying the amount of suffering Odysseus went through by loss of men, animals, and even relationships! All in all, Odysseus did this in order to get back home to his beloved wife and son.

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE & IMAGERY

The Land of the Dead contains a lot of imagery and figurative language, giving the story a more visual concept. For example, Homer describes how Elpenor "sighed, and answered"(Homer, line 586) . It is obviously is an example of imagery. Elpenor is one of Odysseus' men who fell off the boat roof, drunk and now is dead. As a corpse talking, he contributes to the story by adding creativity and imagery within this chapter. He promotes good thoughts and advice to help him continue and accomplish his long journey. So, the thought of Elpenor speaking to Odysseus as a dead man creates imagery to this episode of The Land of the Dead.

DICTION

For diction in The Land Of The Dead, they use the word Erebus which is the region the dead pass through before they enter the land of Hades. This then affects Odysseus because he sees one of his best soldiers there and it makes him cry out of pity for him, "untouched, unmourned, when other cares compelled us. Now when I saw him there I wept for pity and called out to him" (Homer, line 581-582). The reason he cry’s for him is because Odysseus thought that Elpenor, one of his soldiers would be up in Olympus but instead, he’s in Erebus waiting to go to the realm of Hades. So basically that was why Odysseus was weeping in “The land of the dead”.

The episode, The Land Of The Dead would fit into the phase of "Throughout the inmost cave". Reason being, Odysseus is crying because his mother and one of his soldiers is in Erebus, "untouched, unmourned when other cares compelled us. Now when I saw him there I wept for pity and called out to him" ( Homer, line 583-584 and Homer, line 617) Odysseus wants to run out so he doesn't see his mom or his fellow soldier anymore. This episode is "Throughout the inmost cave" because Odysseus sees all these people that he loves in this place instead of Olympus where he thought they would be.

In the Land of the Dead, Odysseus’ was mournful and sorrowful throughout most of the story. For example, when he saw Elpenor with all the other phantoms Odysseus mourned for him because when he saw Elpenor, he recalled how he left him unmourned and untouched. After Elpenor leaves him Odysseus is left sorrowful but still protects the blood that was for Tiresias. All in all, through all the grief Odysseus had gone through he had a right to be mournful and sorrowful, creating the mood in the characters' behavior.
