The origins stem from the Napoleonic wars and was originally about the reclamation of German lands at the river Rhine from the French. It became a mainstay song in Germany during its first unification and was further popularized during The Great War.

Die Wacht Am Rhein even became the pseudo-national anthem of Germany during World War II and was played daily on German radio stations.
