The details given such as the small village and the fact that there is a snake makes it seem like its set in the south. The characters seem a little illiterate and Delia has almost no say in anything making the time period somewhere around the early 1900s.

The narrator of the text is in third person omniscient because it talks about the characters from a distance then goes into detail through dialogue never sticking to just one character but going back and forth.

Because it is in third person the reader gets to know all the events but misses out on the inner dialogue only because this is a short story and not a novel. If this were a longer story there would be more insight especially on Bertha.

The setting, somewhere in the south during the early 1900s, helps the reader visualize how there is most likely dirt roads with the main occupation being agriculture. The adults are not well educated as they do not say complete words for example Delia says “Syke, Ah wants you tuh take dat snake ‘way fum heah". When she really means "Syke, I want you to take that snake away from here".
