1A: Quote - "Where I lived and What I Lived For"

"I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life..." - Henry D. Thoreau

This visual encapsulates the battle that occurs between the choice of living deliberately versus the pursuit of material, temporary riches. The choice on the left, exemplifies the idea of living deliberately, living for one's family and oneself, however, the choice on the right, exemplifies what Thoreau calls living "what was not life," meaning, the pursuit of wealth and idolizing worldly materials, rather than focus on what it truly means to live.

"I cannot preserve my health and spirits, unless I spend four hours a day at least—and it is commonly more than that—sauntering through the woods and over the hills and fields, absolutely free from all worldly engagements." - Henry D. Thoreau

This visual resembles the quote I chose because it presents someone who is constantly burdened by the daily labors and how absolutely exhausting it is to confine oneself to that labor without taking breaks to spend time immersed in nature, as Thoreau does.

"If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown!" - Ralph W. Emerson

This visual, to me, represents the mesmerizing beauty of nature; the individual in the photo seems to be ready to go lengths to admire the world around them (hence, they have climbed up a tree in order to get a better view) and I believe that this is the amount of effort that we should all put it into admiring the beauty around us.

"Even the corpse has its own beauty. "
- Ralph W. Emerson

This visual, in my opinion, encapsulates the essence of the quote because just like Emerson, it emphasizes beauty in terms of meaning: the valley resembling death may not be incredibly pleasing to the eye as the one filled with greenery, but its beauty lay in its meaning, similarly to the way that in a corpse, the beauty also lays in its meaning.

"Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist."
- Ralph W. Emerson

This visual encapsulates Emerson's message about nonconformity because it emphasizes one light bulb out of many; while the others are all laying down and completely off, there is only one, its light fully on and standing up on its own, relying on none but itself. Rather than following the example set by the other light bulbs, it stands out, bright and proud. In order to contribute something, one must rely on themselves and more importantly, they must practice nonconformity, as this light bulb.

This poem by Whitman truly captured my attention and helped me to realize that no matter how unimportant we think we are that we all have a calling in life. Whitman so eloquently says that we all have a role to take on in the play of life, no actor is here by mistake. Whitman helped me to remind myself that no matter how empty everything feels: the cities with skyscrapers towering over the clouds, the multitude of people we walk past everyday that seem to have almost a lifeless gaze behind their eyes, and the futuristic technology beyond our imagination. It all seems so empty and confusing, but Whitman reminded me of the richness in life and the distinct individuality in everyone.
