In both of these excerpts, the authors are encountering experiences that show how everyone is perceived differently, and how they go about these differences. Although being perceived as dangerous and scary maybe more afflicting than someone thinking you know how to make tacos, they are both still discrepancies between peoples' lives and how they are seen.

"Straw into Gold" and "Mother Tongue" both bring up the stereotypes individuals face daily in our society. Anything from being seen as inferior because of your accent to someone assuming your culinary skills because of your race is categorizations that others make in public. These assumptions shape your identity and force you to own up to them and accept who you are as a person and how others see you.

The texts "Mother Tongue" and "Superman and Me" both display how experiences make people understand their differences and how others perceive them. An instance in regards to this is how they are both stereotyped on their ethnic background. In "Mother Tongue" the author's mother was viewed as unintelligent because she couldn't speak the best English since she was a foreigner. In "Superman and Me" Alexie described how others viewed him as "stupid" just due to the fact that he was Native American. These quotes indicate that everyone faces stereotypes from the rest of society, and the only thing that matters is how you overcome them.

In the passage "Mother Tongue" by Amy Tan, the author describes her experience with a foreign mother when she was younger. She explains the struggles her mother had in everyday life because of her "broken English" and how she was ashamed of her because of it. In this citation from the story, the author illustrates the endeavor that is required to be a foreigner in the US. The continual belittling and strenuous abuse were very prevalent throughout her mother's everyday life. This was an ascribed aspect of the mother's identity because society portrayed her as inferior for her cadence and mannerism. For the author, on the contrary, this aspect of her identity has avowed. This is due to the fact that she labeled her mother and herself as lesser because of this element of their identity. This correlates with the central theme given that she and her mother's experiences forced them to adapt to their differences, whether it be accent, culture, or any other part of their identity.

"Straw into Gold" by Sandra Cisneros is a well-known article that narrates the stereotypes and assumptions the author has faced being a Mexican-American woman. In this excerpt, Cisneros describes how just by virtue of being a Hispanic in America you are prone to many stereotypes, whether they are harmless or very serious. The stereotype that the author encounters in this quote is the idea that all Hispanics are chefs when it comes to Mexican food. Cisneros had never made a tortilla in her life. This stereotype has been ascribed to her because it is how others perceive her, whether they think it is detrimental or not. This relates with the central theme for the reason that although this may not seem to be a harsh stereotype of someone, these experiences still shape their identity and could affect them in ways you wouldn't grasp.

Sherman Alexie is a Native American author who has a history with stereotypes and assumptions. In the book "Superman and Me" he described the prejudice he has faced and how he overcame it. This quote from the text shows how culturally Alexie and other Native Americans were told that because of their race they aren't suppose to be smart and educated. He went against that to break the stereotype and help bring this issue into the spotlight. This shaper was ascribed to him because this was how the world viewed him and others of Native descent. This relates to the central theme of understanding your dissimilarities and dealing with them, because the author acknowledged his disparities and fought back against them.

When Staples first experienced people behaving fearfully around him on account of his gender/race he was very bewildered. After years of facing this stereotypical encounter, he began to realize that if he didn’t act cautiously someone might act maniacal towards him because of their perceived stereotypes. This quote shows an example of one of these precautions he has to take to avoid making others uncomfortable and to protect himself. Staples's identity was achieved and ascribed thanks to society seeing him as dangerous forcing him to act prudently to avoid people harming him based on stereotypes.
