      Thanksgiving traditions date all the way back to 1621, when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians had a harvest feast. This event is now known as the very first Thanksgiving. The feast included fowl (deer), wild turkeys, bread made from maize, beans, and shellfish. Thanksgiving now centers around cooking and getting together with family and friends to eat. The tradition of food and family gathering has become the new meaning of the holiday. It is not centered around the original religious significance anymore.
     The most common Thanksgiving foods nowadays are turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. The pumpkin pie originates from the colonists growing pumpkins. They also grew lots of vegetables including potatoes, which is where the mashed potato dish comes from.
     Even though the holiday of Thanksgiving has changed since the first colonial feast, there is still the tradition of feast and gathering that has remained a constant throughout history.
