Prior to the revolution... there was a French social class system called Estates General. It consisted of three Estates/classes: the first Estate was populated by Church officials, the second being Nobles, and the third being Commoners. The people were not happy with this system because the first and second Estates did not pay taxes, which meant all taxes went on the Commoners. The first and second Estates outvoted the third estate, a two to one, making the votes basically biased since only one vote was given to each estate. Due to multiple issues with this system, the commoners proposed a new social system called the National Assembly. The National Assembly was a representation based on the population, which was meant to solve the issue of unfair voting. The upper states disapproved of this system because it meant that the commoners had more power, allowing them to put more restrictions on the upper estates and giving benefits to the commoners. At a meeting called the Nation Assembly to discuss the new system, they revoked the opportunity to enter from the commoners. This led the commoners to group up at a nearby tennis court, where they exclaimed that they would not leave until a constitution was written for them. The people got what they wanted, but everyone who attended got punished.

The king, Louis XVI, starts to guard the palace of Versailles. While he is doing this, he sends his army in the cities to reinforce their power over the people so they don't attempt to overthrow the monarchy. However, King Louis XVI's actions make the people have fear, having an urge to defend themselves by arming themselves. They see his actions as a threat to their freedom. They have success in storming the Bastille, letting prisoners free and having some defense by stealing weapons. A couple of months later, The March on the Palace of Versailles occurs. The people do this because they are unsatisfied with the price of food, mainly bread. Stories spread around that the Queen is responsible for the price of food due to her spending and the one that has all wheat, which is used to make bread. Part of this is justifiable while the other is not. It is important for the people of a community to express their problems, so that the owners may be able to resolve them. It is however not okay to blame someone from just stories and not reliable sources. The people go to the Palace of Versailles to express their concerns regarding food prices but at the same time blame the Queen without evidence other than just these stories. After this event, the people propose a new government, the legislative government. This was a government in which the rulers work with the people to try to keep both sides content. However, this fails because the people with more power, the royals, tried to disband the government. After this government fails, a new government called "The First Republic" rose, having Robespierre as the leader. He goes to extreme measures to succeed in creating the Republic he wanted, such as punishing anyone by death who was against his ideas. This creates what is known as the "Reign of Terror." The purpose of the First Republic was to prevent prior issues and to protect the people's rights. Robespierre ignored the people's views, focusing on his own, causing himself to be put to death by the guillotine, and ending the Reign of Terror.

After the First Republic downfall, The Directory came into play. It was a type of government in which two houses controlled it. The lower house made up new ideas for laws. The upper house decided whether or not these were good laws, deciding to either pass them or deny them. The people had no confidence in this government due to past experiences with the previous government fails. They believed it was gonna fail and be corrupted like all the other ones. However, a man named Napoleon Bonaparte overthrows this government. His power first came from his assistance in defending against a royalist riot, which promoted him as major general. The people accepted him as their ruler when he overthrew the government, naming himself "First Consul." Due to his superior knowledge in the military, he also took other countries, such as Egypt, Austria, Prussia, Portugal, and Spain. Along with his conquest, he made his relatives leaders of the countries he has conquered so far. He weakens England and puts Europe under one country, France. He creates laws known as "Napoleonic Codes." These laws mainly benefited male citizens, reducing the rights of others. He created many political changes, such as the laws. He removed the past social system to allow more freedom for the people, to make a stable government, to allow easy access to education, to strengthen relations with the pope, sell land in North America for his campaigns, and name himself emperor of France. Napoleon first loses power in the Invasion of Russia. He lost badly in this war and later got defeated again by other countries that were working together. He gets kicked to the island of Elba where he later escapes. However, he is then defeated again at Waterloo where he meets his demise in prison on the remote island of St. Helena. His influence over Europe allowed France to have absolute power in Europe. The people also created strong emotions of France, such as massive pride and picking France despite backlash.
