Many farmers lost their jobs in Alabama because the cotton picking business did not pay well due to the cotton-eating beetles. Even the people in with jobs did not earn much. Many people suffered during this time due to divorce, hunger, bad health, unemployment and racism.

Selma, Alabama
Cadets main food would be fried chicken called "Food for defense" chickens from FSA (Farm Security Administration). Cadets then would ride in pursuit planes.

Eutaw, Alabama
Many Negros worked on farms. They hoed and plowed the field. Many receive $50 per year, and children ages 7-14 work on the field. Most of the fields are corn fields.The Negros went to church and lived in small houses.

Greensboro, Alabama
It was unusual when a Negro and a White person has children together. The children do not fit in with either the white kids or the Negro kids. Still many Negroes worked on farms and many kids did not have clean clothing. They lived in tenants. The town had a few small stores.

It started on March 25, 1931, when 9 young black males were arrested for supposedly assaulting a number of white males and raping two young white women.
While on a freight train towards a town to search for jobs when a fight broke out on the train between the white and black males . The fight resulted in the black men throwing the white males off the train. The white males then reported what happened to the stationmaster, who wired ahead for the officials. They stopped the train at a town called Paint Rock, when they discovered two young women wearing boys clothing, hiding on the train, Ruby Bates, and Victoria Price. The women accused the black males of raping them, when in fact they were hiding that they had actually been having sexual relations with some of the other men, they were prostitutes and were afraid of getting prosecuted. Ozie Powell, age 16, Willie Roberson, age 17, Charlie Weems, age 19, Eugene Williams, age 13, Andy Wright, age 19, Roy Wright, age 12. This case is very controversial because the black males were not guilty and the female and males had lied about what had been done, nevertheless the boys were all convicted. Which was majorly influenced by the all white jury. After many years Samuel Liboweitz, one of the premier defense attorneys of the day, came to represent the Scottsboro nine. She said her inspiration was based off racial attitude in her hometown, Monroeville, Alabama. Nelle Harper Lee, was her real name, born on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. Her books that she wrote was "To Kill A Mockingbird" and the sequal to it, "Go Set A Watchmen". The southern states, the Confederacy, were battling the northern states, the Union, mainly based on the issue of slavery. The Confederacy was formed after the electing of Abraham Lincoln, who opposed slavery. Alabama was a part of the Confederate States and was a major supporter of slavery and opposed black civil rights. Roughly 45% of the population in Alabama at that time were slaves. Most political leaders in Alabama were drawn to secession from the Union based on slavery alone. There were multiple battles fought in Alabama between the Confederacy and Union.
The Union eventually won, and Alabama rejoined, following their defeat.

Eventually, the Civil Rights Act in 1964 made it illegal for schools, public places, and jobs to refuse black people. Also in 1965, all black people were given the right to vote. The Ku Klax Klan was founded in 1965 and its members killed and tortured black people to strike fear. Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968. Even though the Fair Housing Act banned discrimination in housing, many black people did not immediately receive good jobs or homes. However, in 2008 a black american, Barack Obama, became president of the United States.
