When planning to create our music video we attempted to choose a non-copyrighted track in order to avoid any issues when exhibiting it on YouTube. We searched a range of different websites such as YouTube, Unsigned.com and Soundcloud. After spending days trying to find a suitable track we found Ivy & Gold’s song ‘The Town’ on sound cloud. We felt this song was a suitable choice for the task of creating a music video as the lyrics and ultimately the pace of the song were interesting and exciting. In order to avoid further copy right we contacted one of the band members in order to gain permission to use their song. We found Rachel’s email address through her Instagram account and contacted her from there. She replied giving us permission to use her song for our A Level production project so we continued to create ideas about what we were going to use within our video.

Within the research phase of our production we spent a lot of our time exploring the genre of indie pop/rock as well as different types of music videos of this genre. The presentation of this research is evident on my blog within the research section. I analysed music videos such as ‘What You Know’ by Two Door Cinema Club and ‘She Said’ by Sundara Karma. I chose these specific songs as they adhere to the indie genre and inspired aspects of narrative and performance we aimed to include within our video. I found these songs on YouTube therefore, I utilised media technologies in order to support my research.

One of the most important pieces of research we conducted as a group was our preliminary task. We were asked to recreate one minute of a pre-existing music video in order to gain the skills on Premier Elements to create our own video. We chose to recreate the video ‘Playing God’ by Paramore as again, it adheres to the indie genre. We used the iPhone 7 Plus camera to film the entirety of the video and used Premier Elements to edit it. We created a shot list as well as determining how the shots cut to the beat in order to make the filming stage somewhat easier. We then presented these aspects of planning on Scribd and other media technologies. From completing these tasks within our Preliminary we knew that it was vital within the planning of our final music video. Once we had filmed the footage we began to edit the shots together on Premier Elements. This was the first time we had used the programme so it was proving difficult. However, we watched YouTube videos in order to understand how to cut shots quickly and efficiently. We also found that within the ‘Playing God’ music video there was a filter added over the top of the image in order to further adhere to the indie genre. Again, we were unsure how to do his so found tips online (google) and created a similar filter quite successfully. This portrays that within our preliminary we were able to gain the skills needed on Premier Elements in order to edit our final music video for Ivy & Gold’s ‘The Town’.

I used media technologies when presenting this research in order to make my blog more eye-catching and interesting to look at. The media technologies I typically used were Prezi, Emaze and Padlet. I also researched media theories such as Todorov, Andrew Goodwin and Laura Mulvey in order to gain insight into the typical conventions of music videos. After completing all the research necessary we uploaded the information to our individual blogs. We created these through the website Blogger and uploaded our findings using different technologies such as PowerPoint Online and Scribd.

Considerations: Music Video

When shooting the footage for our music video there were a lot of things we had to consider. For example, we had to re learn how to use the Canon DSLR camera which we had previously used when filming our thriller. In order to do this we took some practise shots before we started in order to we had a steady and professional hand. We also used a tripod to ensure stability throughout the filming of our shots. We wanted high angle shots to create a sense of variety so we had to bring a chair with us to achieve this. Furthermore, when filming zoom and tracking shots we had to film more than one take in order to make sure the footage wasn’t shaky and unprofessional. We also wanted to include shots of different props such as a knife and the smoke bombs, however, this was something we had to include within our risk assessment due to the effect it had on the public. Consequently, there were some things we learnt when shooting our music video also. For example, when filming we found that taking the lighting into consideration was necessary in order to get crisp, professional looking shots. We already knew a lot about the importance of filming good shots for our music video, therefore, we learnt the most within the editing process.

Technology: Production

As previously stated, we tried a new programme this year when editing as we felt that iMovie was too amateur for the results we wanted. We first used this technology when filming our preliminary as we wanted to gain a slight understanding of how to use it before editing our final production. We first used Adobe Premiere Elements when editing our preliminary so we had gained some idea on how to use the programme overall but were not fully confident. To begin with we imported the footage we had filmed and started to add some of the shots to a fresh timeline. We put the shots in chronological order and cropped them to a suitable length in order to achieve the fast paced video we were aiming for. Within this process we had to watch a few YouTube videos in order to understand how to cut the shots quickly and efficiently rather than doing it the long winded way. We wanted to find this out to speed up the editing process of our first draft. We then decided that we wanted to reverse some of the shots within the sequence we created. Again, we were unsure how to do this so researched how to reverse shots on Premier Elements on google and found the setting tab we were looking for. Within our production we wanted to experiment with editing so we decided to slow some shots down and speed up others in order to create a sense of variety. As we had never properly experimented with the programme before we had to watch a number of YouTube videos in order to figure out how to edit our videos the way we desired. We again, found the tab we were searching for and evidently changed the speed of our shots successfully. Within this process we also had to learn how to repeat shots via copying and pasting them. Another issue we were faced with when editing was the sound. We evidently imported the track to the timeline which allowed us to cut to the beat. However, every time we added new footage to the timeline the track became fragmented. We overcame this problem by removing the track and re adding it at the end of the editing process. There were clearly a number of issues we had to overcome when editing but eventually our editing skills became quite successful. When we had finished cutting and repeating the shots into a sequence we desired we suggested adding filters. After looking at and experimenting with the different coloured layers Premier Elements had to offer we felt it looked rather childish and not professional like we had hoped. Therefore, we removed the filters but began to add effects. The first one evident within our video is when the two protagonists fall asleep and begin their dream. We added a fade at this section of the narrative as well as when Kirsten’s eyes fade into the wolfs. We found that adding transitions like this within our video helped it become more entertaining for our audience.
