Hayes represented the republican party. His campaign slogan was "Hayes the true and Wheeler too" adopted from 1840's "Tippecanoe and Tyler too". " The boys in blue vote for Hayes and Wheeler" was also slogan said by Hayes' fellow union army veterans. Some of the issues that were at the center of his campaign was that the republican party was falling apart and Southern Democrats agreed to back the decision if the Republicans would recall the federal troops that were supporting Reconstruction. He was then elected president of the United States on March 4, 1877 to March 3, 1881 and only served for one term. Hayes won the electoral vote by only one vote. His Vice-President was William A. Wheeler who also only served for one term.

During Hayes first year as the president, he passes the compromise of 1877 which ended Reconstruction by withdrawing federal troops from the states. He also began the efforts that led to civil service reform. Hayes made federal dollars available for infrastructure improvements on the South and attempted to reconcile the divisions left over from the Civil War. This was eventually a grand success because it restored the United States as a unified nation. This compromise also lead to the 13th, 14th & 15th amendments.
