Why should we as educators keep our social media professional? Should we worry about what we post on our personal social media account? If we already have a job, should we worry about what we post? What can we do to change how we post?

Parents and the community hold teachers to a certain standard. They are trusting the care of their most prized commodity, their children, to teachers. Our social media accounts should reflect that teachers are individuals with good moral values that parents and the community want to see. Teachers should use caution to ensure their posts are always respectful.

We as teachers should be professional in any area of our life. We teach kids to be the best they can be, to have integrity and and to do what's right. If we don't follow our own advice, why tell them to do it? Jobs are not always secured.

Fair or not, teachers ARE held to higher standards than many other professions. As adults who are role models to younger charges, we should not take that responsibility lightly. We should project ourselves as the honest and upstanding adults we are or simply have no social media sites at all.

Many moons ago when the interweb was invented by Al Gore, a wise principal told us never to email, post (long before book of faces) etc. anything we would not want to read to him, the superintendant or board-words to live by that some evidently were never told-especially when it comes to religion, politics or personal views posted on public forums.....

I completely agree with being professional and creating boundaries between your personal life and your work life. I also agree that teachers should hold themselves to higher standards as we should be role models to the students we teach. For some of those students we are the only good role models they have.

Teachers are held at a higher standard than other professions because we do influence the young whether we think we should be or not.
