Self-Introduction

Hello! I am Dan Bapilar. I am a sophomore in the Computer Science course at Mapua Malayan Colleges. I really have an interest in technology and digital creativity, and also raising awareness about mental health issues. I like trying to put these interests into practice through projects and content. For Philippine pop culture, I really appreciate music of Filipino origin, and among them, I personally really love OPM, the Original Pilipino Music, and Pinoy hip-hop, which do much storytelling. I love my locality's films and series, especially the local humor and values that they bring out of the box-in from the classic Pinoy movies up to the latest independent films. I follow the Filipino streetwear and how it goes with cultural pride. And I am a fan of Pinoy komiks which always have interesting and innovative ideas. And I like knowing about food culture and how every generation introduces new flavors mixed with old traditions. These aspects of popular Philippine culture inspire my creative efforts and personal reflection.

Philippine Pop Culture to Feature on Padlet

For my Padlet, I would like to feature Pinoy hip-hop, an evolving genre in the music world for the past couple of years. Pinoy hip-hop was once underground; it has been elevated to more mainstream media and platforms through which Filipino youth can now voice out and express themselves freely. Artists like Shanti Dope, Gloc-9, and Al James brought a different way of writing and saying emotions in an OPM performance, considering social issues or personal experience and Filipino pride. So, I really do believe that this genre holds the pulse of modern Filipino youth, as it is huge representation of contemporary Philippine pop culture.

Analysis of Contemporary Philippine Pop Culture through Uses and Gratifications Theory

Pinoy hip-hop goes far beyond being an entertaining product; it significantly contributes to the self-expression, social comment, and culture for young Filipinos. As expounded by the Uses and Gratifications Theory, this genre resonates differently through various personal needs because it gives a method of escape from daily stress and pressure using music. At the same time, it provides narrations that can be reflected in because most hip-hop artists discuss common problems and problems of life, which can make listeners understand and feel a part of something bigger than themselves. Besides this, the genre also offers youth to express Filipino identity in a modern context where trends are incorporated with the traditional values all over the world.

In addition to its personal effect, Pinoy hip-hop also encourages social change by voicing issues that most mainstream media does not talk about or are less represented. Through lyrical storytelling, Gloc-9, and many more, creates awareness on poverty, inequalities, and social injustices. Agenda-setting by such hip-hop music brings attention to these issues. The influence inspires fans' unification and leads the way for discussion and giving support to causes through their music. With this, Pinoy hip-hop contributes to a cultural shift by reframing the experience of Filipino culture and shedding light on burning social issues in a more engaging, accessible, and meaningful manner.
