Known botanically as: Maianthemum canadense, this native North American flower is also known as the False lily of the valley. This species belongs to the lily family, Liliaceae. It can be found in moss boggy areas from New Jersey to Canada. It is commonly "3 elliptic leaves which taper at the base and white floral parts in a 6-pointed, star-like pattern". It is a perennial herb that produces a red fruit. Native Americans have used it for medicinal purposes to cure headache.

The Mayflower is the state flower of Massachusetts. It was formally declared the official flower in 1918, being voted on by the Massachusetts school children; the mayflower defeated the water lily with a 2 to 1 vote. This state flower bears the same name as the vessel that carried the state's most famous residents, the Pilgrims, who landed on the shores in 1620. In the year 1925, it became illegal to remove the flower from its natural setting, as the leaves were over-collected for wreath making.
