In my opinion to put it simply, profanity is a part of life, and literature is often the sharing of different lives and experiences in order to say something, so profanity belongs in literature. I think that this idea that literature has to be proper and formal is quite outdated, and possibly classist too, as it suggests that it is written by and for wealthy, well-educated people. In fact I find the use of profanity to be especially powerful because it tells you a lot about a character, and it usually appears in relation to characters of lower status which perhaps don't have enough of a voice in society. At a glance, it may appear relatively simple, but reading The Road specifically made me really appreciate how interesting writing style can be.
