https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNTpbY7T4Ck
This video gives you a quick insight into what InFluent is all about. The game takes place in a virtual reality environment where your avatar can use a special device to scan all the items in its surroundings. Upon scanning an item you are shown the vocab word in your selected language and the avatar will read it out to you. There are many other features, such as saving words, to allow for a real learning curve. Unfortunately this game was not available for free so I couldn't test it out myself. But according to customer reviews the game offers a fun way of acquiring fundamental vocabulary. Unfortunately it is not helpful to users that already have basic knowledge of the language they are trying to improve in as it merely focuses on vocabulary, rather than conversations and grammar. All things considered it seems like a fun tool for kids that might refuse to learn vocabulary just by memorizing words.

MindSnacks

This language learning app is structured quite similarly to Duolingo. While there are so called 'quests' to be conquered, the whole 'game' really just is a collection of interactive exercises to learn vocabulary and grammar of your chosen language. I think this app could be improved by adding actual games to the existing tasks. In my opinion MindSnacks is a bit outdated, as there are better language learning apps out there with more features and improved results.

This website was probably the worst attempt at a language learning game that I have encountered throughout my research. Not only is the whole layout and user interface really badly designed, but the content is very limited, repetitive and not really engaging. I would not recommend Digitaldialects to anyone looking for a platform to improve their foreign language skills.

Virtual Reality

Lastly, I wan't to talk about virtual environments in games such as sims, second life or world of warcraft. These allow users to communicate with others all around the world. From experience I know that all of my friends who partake in these virtual reality games had a much higher level of English than others back in school (in Germany). The international gaming community tends to communicate primarily through English, which benefits non-natives tremendously. The educational aspect of these games is thus evident, ecen though they were not built with the intention to facilitate language learning. The main problem is that they are very focused on English as a user common language. So even though players could try and converse with foreigners in their native tongue for practice purposes, very few would do so, as their main intention of playing is fun. I would recommend virtual reality games to anyone who is already a fan of computer games and is wanting to improve their English. Anyone else might still enjoy playing them, but wouldn't get much educational value out of it.
