Ancient Times: Manual Typewriters

In the early 80's manual typewriters were huge in the "technology" world at the time. Students would have to manually move the return bar at the end of each line. Corrections were made using liquid white out which would require to to take a break before continuing. The early practice involved typing each letter 5 times, pressing the key down firmly rather than just tapping it.

New and Improved: Early Computers

Later in the 80's computers were introduced. At the time they had to share them with one or two students. They did not have access to the internet but they learned about different key functions and how to download floppy disks. This was a step up from the typewriters since letters could be easily deleted.

Dialing the Internet?

In the 90's dial up internet became a phenomenon. This was the first commercial internet service provider and was very beneficial in the classroom. The main problems when starting with this service was the slowness, internet now is about 1,000 times faster and more reliable overall.

Suddenly Everything is Clear

Smart boards were introduced in the 90s but gradually got better over time. They described it as a box television on a cart that could be rolled and a plain whiteboard together that would project what was on the computer. At the time this was really neat because it seemed technology was teaching students multiple ways to learn. Overall this helped students interact to present new material in different ways.

Portable Computers

Today it is absolutely normal to have a laptop in the classroom especially after covid. Some students even bring their own. This help with self learning and is able to express students creativity. It's a great platform today because if a students did not finish at school they could easily take it home and do their assignments. Chromebooks are a different type of lap tops that were first introduced in 2012 and began to be a big hit in most schools.

But I NEED My Phone

For most teachers having a phone in the classroom can be a big no no. Overtime teachers have seemed to become more lenient with this concept. As stsudents were able to research faster and get their word done in a timely matter if actually focused. The main problem with phones are that they could be a distraction, some teachers limit the time on them so students feel like they have to focus only on research and not social media.
