This magnificent building is regarded as one of the leading examples of the early Gothic English arquitecture. Its main body was completed in 38 years (from 1220 to 1258). Since 1549 this cathedral has had the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom at 404 feet (123m). It also has the largest cloister and cathedral close in Britain (32ha). It contains a clock which is among the oldest working examples in the world, and inside it houses an original copy of the "Carta Magna", a project sketch of a primitive constitution in the Middle Ages.
A "Tower tour" is offered to visitors, in which the interior of the hollow spire, with its ancient wooden scaffolding, can be viewed.
The cathedral is the subject by a famous painting by John Constable, and apparently it was also one of the sources of inspiration for Ken Follet´s novel The Pillars of the Earth.
