Aim: To investigate the reliability of diagnosis of depression and schizophrenia.
Method: The researchers asked a group of British psychiatrists and a group American psychiatrists to diagnose patients by watching a number of (clinical) interviews wherein patients described their symptoms. After the results of the diagnoses from both groups were collected, the researchers analyzed the data.
Results: The researchers found that British psychiatrists were twice as likely to diagnose the patients with depression and the American psychiatrists were twice as likely to diagnose the patients with schizophrenia.
Conclusion: The results indicated that the same cases did not result in similar diagnosis in the two countries. This points towards problems of reliability as well as cultural differences in interpretation of symptoms and thus in diagnosis.

Aim: To test the reliability of diagnosis
Method: 5 males and 3 females, got admitted in hospital psychiatric, all patients used fake names and jobs in order to protect their privacy. They demonstrated symptoms of hearing voices, however, after being put in the psychiatric ward they stopped showing the symptoms they stated when first entering the hospital. Participants were asked to write in a journal how they were treated and their experiences in the psychiatric ward. The participants began to test the treatment of the staff on patients by asking basic questions such as: 'Pardon me Mrs/Ms/Mr/Dr could I join staff meetings' or 'when am i most likely to be discharged'. After a while actual patients began to catch on to the experiment.
Findings: All pseudo-patients began to dislike the environment, and began to demonstrate sypmtoms of isolation. their medical records were not kept confidential.
Conclusion: overlap of the sane and insane. Outside feeling moody, or depressed is a normal behaviour and easy to pass over, however, in the psychiatric ward these behaviours are considered as being pathological. depersonalisation and powerlessness was felt by the pseudo-patients.

131 patients were selected from a hospital in New York to conduct assessment procedures before diagnosing them
On re-evaluation:
- 16 received the same diagnosis from the original 89 diagnoses of schizophrenia
- 15 recieved the same diagnosis from the original 50 diagnoses of mood disorders
Demonstrates that there are different chances of receiving the same diagnosis which can then result in different treatment.
This suggest a lack of validity in diagnosis. This may be because there are significant individual and cultural differences for the symptoms of mental disorders.
