Why use PBL Why do you think PBL is not used more widely in our education systems? What is stopping us from achieving what is outlined in the video? What are the biggest challenges we as educators face and who is stopping us from adopting the PBL approach in our classrooms?

I believe teachers are reluctant to use PBL in class because it is something different, something that does not come in textbooks. It is something that requires extra work for teachers and sometimes teachers just prefer to follow the textbook. Changes are always difficult and there is also a part of fear from our part I guess. It is a change of everything where we should leave the textbook aside and change the role of the students from passive to active.
by Paula, Spain

The PBL is based on collaboration and so on group work, but the curriculum requires individual grades. Furthermore, as a learning process, PBL needs an assessment integrated thoughout the entire unit. PBL is based on formative assessment and our evaluation system on summative assessment.
These are the difficulties I "may bumb into" using PBL with my students.

Reflections on our current practice

Hi there,

I'm Francesca and I teach English as second language in a lower secondary school in Tuscany, in Italy. I have six classes and my students are from 11 to 14 years old. I usually use a communicative approach to teach the language. I noticed that using more traditional methods means to have "students who do not remember what they "learned" the day before" so I have been trying to give them the opportunity to use English in meaningful contexts. That is why I am really interested in PBL and I am learning how to use this approach to engage, motivate the students and help them not only to improve their language knowledge but also their critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills.

In particular, I would like to work using PBL approach with a second class made up of 25 students with different English language competentences but really interested and stimulated by challenges. I am thinking about a unit where students have to plan a real situation using English.

In the magic circle students shared opinions about what we have done, what we were doing and what we were going to do during a two days trekking experience. They planned, revised and evaluated the activities....they collaborated to the success of the experience.
