About Malka Zimetbaum

Born on the 26th of January, 1918 to Pinka Zimetbaum and his wife Chaya in Brezko, Poland. She was the youngest of five children and shortly moved to Belgium after her birth. And records showed her being registered as working in the city of Antwerp.

At a early age she joined Hanoar Hatzioni, which was a Jewish youth organization. She also got a job working as a seamstress to support her father who recently became blind. She also worked as a secretary fora small diamond trading company based in Antwerp.

In this time she learned to be proficient in French, Flemish, English, German and Polish. This would become extremely helpful as in 1942 she was arrested when looking for a hiding place for her and her family. She was taken first to Fort Breendork, then to Mechelan five days later. Where she deported to Auschwitz-Birkenua. She was one of the 101 females that lived, the other 717 where considered unable to work and immediately gassed. Due to her ability to speak several languages, she was put into camp administration where she was used as an interpreter and messenger.

She was described by fellow prisoners as being a decent, young lady who cared and had morals. She was stated as giving bread, cheese and carrots to those who did not have enough to eat. And always held people accountable for their health. Although she was treated as a normal prisoner, with some special permissions such as being given more food and being able to take showers.

Eden started forming a close bond with Malka, which caused him to realize that at one point or another they will share the same fate as all the jews, no matter how well they treated Malka. And at the time Malka started to get worse off with Malaria and other diseases. So Eden managed to get his hands on a SS uniform, SS identification card and planned to march Malka out disguised as a male prisoner while he wore the SS uniform.

Eden and Malka were tucked away waiting for Weislar's command to proceed forward. Once they received that command Eden and Malka marched forward. Eden followed SS regulations and marched in a slow pace passing a SS soldier. All it looked like from Weislar is a SS soldier escorting a prisoner. But as soon as they got out of the camp they went 200-300 yards forward and escaped.

Once they realize it was two old prisoner at the camp the first commander of the camp said it wasn't worth searching for them.

Although on July 6th, 1944 the Bielitz Gestapo captured Malka and Eden. Where then they were sent back to the camp, trapped in a bunker and interrogated and tortured. They stopped treating Malka with privilege to, beating her and treating her like a regular prisoner. Eventually they were sentenced to hang, although Eden stated that neither him or Malka would present themselves alive to the executioner.

Both Edek's and Malka's execution was on the 15th of September, 1944. Edek, as a sign of bravery immediately went onto the stool. And when the SS officer in charge of the execution read out the sentence Edek slipped his head into the noose and kicked away at the stool. Although the noose was not tied tightly and SS officer's managed to bring him back up. So he waited throughout the SS officer's speech and said "Long live Poland" before the stool was pulled from underneath him and he hung.

Malka's execution was a lot different, she was brought to the gallows where she proceeded to draw a razor and slit her wrists. To where she was then struck by the SS officer reading the sentence and broke her hand, where she famously said "I shall die a herione, but you will die a dog!" She was then brought to the crematorium, where she is speculated to of died on the way there from blood loss.
