In 2015 i had the honour to teach analytical chemistry to the last year of the Environmental Chemistry course. Being happy of the work, i asked the class an argument they would have discussed and experimented in the school hours. They have choosen the BW photography and all the chemistry that was behind it "to produce all together a memory of together all...". This is a picture of one of the classrooms I teach in. It is not my real classroom as the pic was taken from pininterest but it is just exactly the same (even smaller). We call it the 4.0 classroom and it is the only one in the whole school building (I feel honoured to have that class for 5 hours a week!!). Why does this mean collaboration to me? Just have a look!!! No barriers or fixed seating rows, possibility to create discussion tables or groups, opportunity to watch the interactive whiteboard or other visual aids from different perspectives and above all, the chance every student may have in moving group and bring his/her own contribution to other groups.

Team work is necessary but it is also very demanding. Team work only happens if we are able to respect the individuals who belong to the group. Sometimes, an individual has to develop personal skills to be ready for group work. It's very important to feel welcomed in a team, otherwise one tends to feel he/she can work better individually. In short, more hands should work better than a pair of them.

PS - Something that annoys me a lot is the fact that being tolerant may be seen in a group as a synonym of being twisted or something of the kind, that type of prejudice as any other is an obstacle to group work. PBL may try to bring people together,but all individuals have their limits when it comes to group work, I'm afraid.

In this activity students worked on groups, each had a role:

1. identify on the sheet and record the correct answers (student below)

2. Write all the answers wrong or right (student on de right)

3. Write down the participating of the group by the circle or communications (student on de left)

At the end all group speak about their opinions and we correct the exercise and together plan our project based on the template I have then to explore.

Emotions are very important too: to do a good job I need to feel at ease, so I need to express my feelings and emotions.

As you can see in this picture, each child worked together to cake a cake. In this picture only one child is stirring the mixture, but each one had an equal opportunity and worked their way in collaborating with each other to achieve the same goal, baking a cake. School projects are good examples of how to teach and learn about PBL. The picture I attach here shows some students of my school who participate in the Project "Eco-Escolas " following the objectives of the "Foundation for environmental Education" to develop environmental attitudes towards a more sustainable planet. The theme is developed in the classroom during the week and everyday, after classes, these students go to every room at school, including the headmaster's office( in the photo) to empty the dustbins and separate paper and plastic. Students develop collaborative skills as they work as a team , by respecting roles, communicating decisions, defining and redifining plans , being supportive and building confidence. The final product of this project ( a more sustainable school) will be relevant, creative and long lasting.

This is a group of my students measuring the irrigation canal in order to calculate its flow of water. They collaborate, because some of them measure the length, width and depth; another person calculate the volume and choses the most suitable units; another person is timing how long takes a leaf or a little stick to go over the length, and another person calculates the flow.

In my opinion, this picture shows collaboration really happening. All students work for a common purpose and each one gives is contribute. They communicate, they share and discuss ideas, they investigate, they decide wich tasks each member will do, they help each other. They really work as a group.

I chose a picture of my 11^th graders working on a project and developing effective collaboration. And why do I call it effective collaboration, one of the most important 21^st century skills? Because resources and responsibilities were established guaranteeing that all members of the team could work optimally and contribute according to their abilities. Then they brainstormed ideas suggesting and writing them down without stopping to criticise them, afterwards they made decisions sorting through the many options provided to the group and arriving at a single option to move forward. They also evaluated the products and the processes to be able to give feedback of what was working well and what improvements could be made. Then they set goals to decide what result was desired, and managed to define an achievable objective. Finally they managed time by matching up a list of tasks to a schedule and pursued progress towards a common goal.

This picture was taken a coupe of years ago during a particular school trip. The noisiest and most problematic class of the school in terms of school results and social relationships was taken to Turin for a two-project on peace and integration. In this photo they're sorting out second hand clothes and preparing them to be re-used by less fortunate people who come to this centre for shelter and help. All together around a table, doing something very practical and easy but learning something that it's so difficult to teach at school. I’ve chosen this picture mainly because it pictures perfectly my idea of what collaboration really is. Let’s see. We have a group of people sitting around a table and we assume they are working on something because we can see pens, notebooks, tablets, graphics, and draws. It seems that the lady in white is talking because the way her hands are shown. Plus, we have several icons that tell us that working is still in progress, for instance, the gear and the robot icons. A padlock and crumpled paper can emphasize that idea too. The same applies to the “refresh icon”. Over and over while creating something we have to refresh our ideas and manage different points of view.

The camera and the tablet icons tell us that this team is working with ICT tools and that the final product will probably be shared on social media. We have the like button (it can also stand for a final agreement within the group), a kind of “tweeter”, a feed and a star. Additional, we can spot 2 hearts. Will this mean Instagram or an ingenious message that every project should be done with our affectionate hearts? And last, but not the least the cups of coffee. Can you think anything better to promote creativity?

I chose this picture from an outdoor educational program of our Environmental Education Center. The children taking part in this dramatization game work together to show the water cycle in nature. They use simple reused materials as papers and plastic caps to show how the water from sea, rivers and lakes gets evaporated with the help of the sun, and then it turns into clouds, rain and snow returnig back to earth and filling our water resources, lakes, rivers and the sea The children have to cooperate in order to show the whole water circle, work together and individually at the same time in order to reach a common goal.

So this is photo was taken 2 years ago. It is my origami workshop group. Boys at the back are holding "senbazuru" (sen [1,000] + ba [number counter for birds] +tsuru [crane] = 1,000 [paper] cranes: senbazuru). We have made about 400 cranes and it was a gift of hope for one of our former student's cousin. The boy was fighting with cancer. I decided that it is a good opportunity to introduce students to cooperative work and doing something for others using traditional origami. For us it was quite a big challenge.

The reason I chose this image has to do with the word scaffolding. PBL has to do with real life problem solving and the scaffolding that is provided by the facilitator/teacher will direct or redirect the group of students into the correct pathway by using problem-solving skills without the teacher's guidance. The pleasure of looking at a final piece of work entirely produced by themselves, will give them joy and will make them more able to face future challenges (Lego puzzles)!

The magic happens every time I see students bending over a table and sticking their heads together. When you see them like this you simply know they are busy talking to each other and fully engaged in the activity. My students are here working together to solve a quiz... they had to collaborate to answer all the questions and it was quite a challenge! The picture was taken in Monsanto, Portugal, during an outdoor activity together with Physical Education and English. Students had to solve a quiz and ride their bikes together in a specific trail. It was great fun.

I chose this one because it is recent and it is the only thing ressembling collaborative work that I have a picture of.
For the European Day of Languages I had students of German (8th gtade - level 2) searching for some basic information on each country: having the flag as a basis, they searched for the country and capital. The students in the 9th grade searched for the language and nationality , currency, important landmark. It was done in groups of 3 or 4, where each group received 3 or 4 different flags/ countries. The result was beautiful in the eye and I think they learned something in a different way.
