I found it so interesting that the political parties swing back and forth regarding their messages. Therefore, this problem is not related to political parties; it is an issue on all sides of the political arena.

Nixon said the problem is the blacks (Republican). Clinton was the president who endorsed the idea of "3 strikes you're out" (which had support from both parties). This law lead to mass incarcerations; more than any other president (Democrat).
Clinton also created the current racial undercaste with his racial agenda on welfare which changed the welfare system: imposed a 5 year life time limit and banned eligibility for welfare if the person is convicted of a felony.

I feel it is still a sensitive subject to talk about when it really doesn't have to be. However, if it is brought up in the correct ways, such as our discussions during #PC, people can open up and actually voice the questions they may have and that's when people will truly start to learn and open their minds

I read a very thought provoking post on facebook yesterday titled "How I Discovered I Am White" and I could honestly talk about everything this women wrote but she touched on a particular part of our history and how we've been taught it that really struck me

" 'The culture of power determines which version of history is told and retold'
Prior to the Women's Right Movement, women were stuck in the home while men went to work and supported them. But then women were liberated and able to get jobs working outside of the home. Right?
WRONG. White, Middle to upper class women were 'stuck in the home.' Women of color always worked outside the home. In fact, women of color were probably working the homes of the white women our history is written.
So one the most oft-repeated, trusted narratives about American history erases the history of women of color. It is dead wrong. They are erased. Non-existent."

Many years ago, I, like the person above, thought this was a nice concept to express the idea that a person was not judging someone solely on their race. Today, I find this concept ridiculous. I would literally have to be blind to not take note of someone's race, and furthermore, I don't want to ignore a part of someone that is integral to who they are and all the history that comes with it.

I feel that this is fairly accurate from what I've read so far in the first couple of chapters. When our government seems to allow 🤬 to filter into certain neighborhoods and then institute a not needed policy that takes aim at those with brown or black skin, then I do see this as a sort of caste system. Today we are very much still seeing how often poor whites are fighting to keep their place above those of color.

I read "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria: And Other Conversations About Race" (I have the book and an audiobook copy) and have a whole new perspective on racial identity. Throughout my life, race has consumed every second of my life from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep. I will elaborate more on that last point if anyone would like at our next meeting.

Yes, it seems that although the Republican administrations were more aggressive in their strategies to keep people of color from gaining power and respect, the Democratic administrations were not much better.
