What questions does this raise for you? How should individuals act in order to protect Asian Americans and their communities? How should institutions, such as school, and politicians, and government act? How can interpersonal acts lead to systemic/institutional racism? by Señora Guadiamos

It all comes down to being proactive, I think. On an institutional level, garnering support among the powerful is the first step, which then is followed by actual change. On an individual level, all that really needs to happen is understanding that there is an issue with racism and actively attempting to circumvent or act against that racism.

Instead of letting anti-AAPI rhetoric spread, people should stop it when they hear it, whether by explaining why it is wrong or questioning why the person said it. By staying silent when hearing anti-Asian rhetoric, you are complicit. We also have to stay informed and educated, because as I saw from the previous Padlet, a lot of people were unaware of how bad violence against AAPI is getting.

Individuals need to be willing to help victims, as this leads to the idea that this racism won't be tolerated. I think institutions need to be tougher on anti-Asian racism; even if they can't be classified as hate crimes, there should still be some form of punishment for such unprovoked crimes that typically happen in broad daylight. Interpersonal acts can lead to systemic/institutional racism by normalizing racism against a marginalized group, leading policymakers and enforcers to not care about the welfare of said marginalized groups.

The first question that comes to mind is "What are individuals doing to support those who are in danger of experiencing systemic racism?". I think that more able people should be providing support to those who need it through emotional and mental reassurance as well. Like myself, many may have little knowledge on the issue, meaning that individuals should start by spreading awareness about the issue through as many platforms as possible. Also, this should not be a fight just pertaining to AAPI communities, it should be taken up by the nation as a whole. Institutions can do similar things like spreading awareness and discouraging racism in general.
