Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

The Trust vs. Mistrust stage is the first among the developmental stages. It happens from newborns to the age of 18 months. This is when the infant forms a bond with the people in their life. This happens by the consistency of care and stability from these people. The individual than forms trust and knows they are someone to rely on. In textbook "Child" it states, "People need to trust the world and the people in it, but they also need to learn some mistrust to protect themselves from danger." My family was the resolution. I had a big support system when it came to family. This led me to create bonds of trust from my early years of development. I had a lot of stability with the people in my life even though I did not have that with my physical environment as I moved a lot during these years.

Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

The second developmental stage is autonomy vs. shame and doubt. This happens from ages 18 months to 3 years. This is when children become conscious of who they are. They are able to control their actions. Children are able to make their own decisions based on what they think or how they are influenced. The textbook states, "The strength that emerges during this stage is will. As children are better able to make their wishes understood, they become more powerful and independent." My teachers and parents help solve this. I was able to participate in activities. If I made a mistake, these figures in my life made it known that it was okay. This led me to keep going. I grew up a very nervous child. I would let my anxiety build up. It took a while for me to pass this and would not have been able to do it on my own.

The third developmental stage is initiative vs. guilt. This happens through ages 3 to 5 years. In this stage, children are able to assert themselves in social interaction. In the textbook, "The resolution to this was when I gained the ability to say sorry. Instead of ignoring a situation, I would try to solve it. I would do this by apologizing for my wrongs." The resolution to this was when I gained the ability to say sorry. Instead of ignoring a situation, I would try to solve it. I would do this by apologizing for my wrongs. My family had trouble saying sorry to each other at times. Through my social interactions at school, I was able to gain this skill.

The fourth developmental stage is industry vs. inferiority. This occurs in ages around 6 to 12. In this stage, children are introduced to success. The more they can have can affect their own self-worth. In the textbook, it states, "If children are unable to obtain the praise of others or lack motivation and self-esteem, they may develop a feeling of low self-worth and thus develop a sense of inferiority." My school system helped solve this. I feel like I was given resources and teachers who helped me succeed even if failure came along the way. I was very passionate in school so I would be scared of failure. After a while, I realized that trying my hardest means having to fail once in a while. That has nothing to do with my own self-worth.

The fifth developmental stage is identity vs. confusion. This stage happens through ages 13 to 18 years. This is when an individual becomes more independent and searches for the sense of self. The textbook states, "The effort to make sense of the self is part of a healthy process that builds on the achievements of earlier stages—on trust, autonomy, initiative, and industry—and lays the groundwork for coping with the challenges of adult life." My resolution to this was to decide to surround myself with people I could be myself around. This also meant spending time exploring new interests. This gave me time to see what my identity could look like. I struggled with who I was with different people in my life that I needed to focus on who I actually was.

The sixth developmental stage is intimacy vs. isolation. This occurs in ages 18 to 35 years. During these years, people have to form relationships on their own. Whether they are friendships or significant others. The textbook says, "The increased intimacy of adolescent friendship reflects cognitive as well as emotional development."Creating bonds on my own would be the resolution. I am at the age where I need to put myself out there. By creating bonds and valuing them I will not isolate myself.

The seventh developmental stage is generativity vs. stagnation. This happens through ages 35 to 65 years. As people become older, they might have the need to the needed. While looking for ways to be productive in society can have people looking back on past achievements. They now look at their life through a measurement of success. The textbook said, "People continue to shape their development throughout their lifespans." The resolution I feel will come with this is reassessing my values. Success looks different to every person. If I feel like I need a legacy for my life, it should be something authentic for me.

The final developmental stage is integrity vs. despair. This stage happens to ages 65 years and/or older. The textbook states, "We each continue to write and experience the story of human development for ourselves and our society for as long as we live." In this stage continues from the last as people look back on their life. They could look back with joy and thankfulness as well as despair and regret. I feel my resolution for this would be acceptance. The way I live my life is something I won’t be able to change once the future comes. Accepting my faults while appreciating my achievements will solve this.
