The "Swinging Sixties" was well known for major shifts in culture, politics, music and fashion. The Civil Rights movement, feminism, the Kennedy assassination, and the appointment of the first Black Supreme Court Justice, this decade had an impact on expression which was mirrored in 1960;s fashion trends.

60's fashion was changing extremely often. Bright colors, tie-dye shirts, long hair and beards. Women were wearing short skirts and men wore tunics and capes. Just a decade earlier, these fashion trends would not have been believed.

-The typical daytime look consisted of a bulbous hat over teased bee-hive style hair, deep armholes and wide sleeves, and a rounded jacket that came in at the hem.

-A slender look was common for the evenings. Long-waisted dresses with an overblouse replaced the fitted waistline and full skirt, and the long dress of sequins or crystal beads had replaced the bouffant dress.

-Contemporary architecture and sculpture were the most common inspirations for designers in the 1960's which was seen in bloused clothes, long overblouses, sashes tunics, and exaggerated makeup ( such as red lips) and short hair.

-Skirts got shorter in the 60's, and were worn with low-heeled shoes, placing more attention on the leg.

-Abstract and expressionist art were influences for silk designs.

-Deep and dark colors were the rage in 1960. They ranged all across the spectrum between purple, red, and green. Additionally, neon pink was popular for those looking to make a statement.

-Fur and hats maintained popularity, as well as fur and seal coats.

The 80's trends covered various styles, from sophisticated to grunge. During the 1980's, fashion models were depicting styles seen in tv shows. From pearl necklaces to Pam's hair and baggy knits, the 80's were etching with animal prints, denim, and Doc Martens.

Brooke Shield and Kim Elexis were a few influences taking the reins, flaunting designs by designers such as Ralp Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace, Giorgio Armani, and more. Athleisure brands like Nike, Reebok, and Adidas became the go-to for the people of the 80's.

-Statement leather dresses: very elegant leather dresses with bold cuts in vivid colors. These looks were often completed by a heavy smoky eye and fishnet stockings. The style is still very much in Vogue and still impresses today.

-During the 80's, the craze for prints started to make a lot more sense. The vibrant floral print and iconic animal print began to appear in nearly all apparel and accessories and is beginning to make a comeback and reappear in high street stores and online shopping.

-One main popularity was neon hues. It was featured on leggings, headbands, and sometimes even socks. Accessories were dipped in the fluorescent hues of the brightest pinks, limey yellows and vivid greens which added an edge to any outfit.

-A classic and what the 80's were most popular for- monokinis. These were washed in vivid tones and were highly structured. Any outfits including these were often completed with heavy accessories.

-In the 1980's, denim took our attention and became a classic. The denim movement was established during the 80's fashion era, from ripped to the mom jeans and layovers.

A more recent show was by the American designer Rick Owens, previously known for eccentric shows, this time with his Spring-Summer 2016 Collection titled "Cyclops". The show consisted of some unusual outfits, and this was because the models carried each other; some like a hanging bag or a backpack but held by straps, meaning press labelled the collection as "the backpack women."

According to Owens, his inspiration was the idea of 'motherhood, regeneration and the ability of women to feed each other.' There were additionally references to birthing, references to aging and the cycle of life, and led to the show overall becoming a large and wide statement of boldness.

Zendaya was a person of the moment in 2023, and Louis Vuitton utilised this and delivered one of the best fashion video ads of the year.

Zendaya is an American actress and singer born in Oakland, California. She gained prominence for her role on Disney Channel sitcom 'Shake it Up, following with her film breakthrough in 'Spider Man:Homecoming' and 'The Greatest Showman.' Her performance of a young drug addict in HBO's 'Euphoria' won her the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

When they have such a well-known model to work with, they used this wisely to create an effective campaign to promote their work. The French brand used a stunning French setting for the actress to shine in, where Zendaya is walking through the iconic Villa E-1027, one of the life symbols of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and a fitting tribute to the companies roots.

The sole focus is the Capucines bag, one of Louis Vuitton's most recognisable and loved pieces. Pairing the actress and the signature bag together forms the perfect way to catch the interest of an audience and make the piece appeal to them.

Billie Eilish is here to prove that accessories can be both designer and eco-conscious.

Born and raised in LA, Billie Eilish was barely a teen when her song "Ocean Eyes" became viral. She collaborated with her brother Finneas O'Connell to create the tracks for her debut album EP 'Don't Smile at Me' and her hit album 'When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?', and these established her as a global sensation and seven-time Grammy winner before the age of 20. In more recent times, she is known for her track 'What Was I Made For' from the Barbie movie soundtrack.

Available in two designs, the 1955 Horsebit handbag sits alongside Eilish in photos and video for the product's launch. Decked out in Gucci tailored to match her trademark oversized look, Billie Eilish models the bags in a cinematic video to her Barbie song 'What Was I Made For' whilst riding in the back of a speeding truck and posing with a red electric guitar.

Starring Eilish, the campaign showcases the first handbag crafted in Demetra, Gucci's innovative animal-free material made with 75% plant -derived raw material sources.

The Grammy winner has long been an advocate for climate action, so its no mystery as to why Gucci would choose Eilish to bring in its eco-friendly new product.

The story behind Stussy begins in California during the 1970's. Shawn Stüssy could typically be seen shaping surfboards, embellishing them with designs and his signature. In spring of 1980, Stussy opened a surfboards shop in his hometown of Laguna Beach, and to help attract customers and help sales, he started selling Stussy clothing adorned with his hand drawn logo. Just like that, Stussy was THE brand for surfers, skaters, and other subcultures.

Shawn met accountant Frank Sinatra Jr. at the Mammoth Mountain ski complex, and he decided to go into business with Stussy as he saw great potential in the business. In 1984, Stussy Inc was formed.

Fast-forward to today and Stussy is just as relevant, with its recent collars with Nike, Birkenstock, and Our Legacy.

The latest designs parodied LA's celebrity culture, sending sheepskin boots and leather Erewhon grocery bags down the runway.

Today, a brand known for its couture hardly resembles its origins. However, much like its originator Cristobal Balenciaga, the modernisation of the label has been the subject of public controversy. In November 2022, Balenciaga released its holiday ad campaign featuring children holding teddies in bondage harnesses and costumes. Backlash against the images were quick with the hashtag 'cancelBalenciaga' trending across Twitter and TikTok, and many accusing the brand and its creative director of condoning pedophilia and exploitation. Following the backlash, celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Julia Fox made a series of statements on social media stating they were "reevaluating their relationship with the brand" and have "zero relationship with the brand."

Demna Gvasalia, the creative director of the brand, made his first major contributions with the alternative takes on the trainer. His Speed trainer, a knife calf-length design, mimics a sock and spawned countless knockoffs. Fashion critics noted the Speed's comfort whilst criticising its looks. Demna continued to capitalise on the "ugly" shoe trend, launching the Triple S in 2017.

Well-known for its bold aesthetic, leopard print is making waves in 2024. From its glamorous origins in the 1940's where Hollywood stars flaunted the print, to its associations with punk rock in the 1980's, it has always radiated confidence and individuality.

Whilst some may view the print as a bold statement pattern, it can be considered as a versatile neutral used to elevate any outfit. Neutral shades like cream, black and white compliment leopard print well, and the juxtaposition of the bold print against the simplicity of black or cream allows the print to take centre stage.

With a general distaste for "quiet luxury", a revival on the horizon, and the TikTok viral "mob wife aesthetic" taking over feeds, leopard print has emerged as a key print for 2024. From shoes, trousers, tops and slip dresses, the print has successfully reestablished itself into the coolest girls of fashion's wardrobes. From Jennifer Lopez's head-to-toe feather leopard print look to Dua Lipa's minimal approach, celebs are obsessed with the re-emergence of this look. Luckily, social media has an abundance of inspiration on how the chicest girls are styling the print.

Whilst red is considered an extroverted colour and one that symbolises anger, passion and danger, it's been interesting to see how brands and lovers of fashion have been translating it through a minimalist view.

You could say it has been an "it" girls colour before it took over social media. The iconic red lip, red shoes, red nails- no matter what form they've been in, they've all ben part of an iconic getup and aesthetic.

Previously, red was only for the rich who could afford expensive dye, and in some countries it was forbidden for citizens to wear red. The colour dominated fall-winter runways in 2023 with red looks from Alexander McQueen, Huishan Zhang, and Valentino. Red is the colour with the longest wavelength in the light spectrum, meaning our brains see this shade first- if you are looking to stand out in a crowd and make an impression, red is the best option.

Sheer fabrics are making a triumphant return to the runway, bringing in an era of nostalgia and influence from the early 90's supermodels and 2000's dressing. For the Spring/Summer 2024 season, sheer and translucent materials are reappearing on runways, being spotted a few times at Copenhagen Fashion Week, London Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week.

Translucent items are now arriving in shops after appearing as skirts and semi-sheer tops on spring 2023 runways. They're the perfect layering pieces, but items such as skirts and dresses can be worn alone if done correctly.

One of the alluring aspects of sheer fabrics is their versatility. They can be styled in various ways to suit different occasions and moods. For daytime, a sheer blouse paired with trousers exudes sophistication, whilst a sheer cardigan over a basic tee and denim adds a touch of bohemian to a casual look. By night, sheer fabrics taken on a seductive appeal, seen in the form of slinky dresses with intricate beadwork or delicate embroidery, offering a glimpse of skin.

Throughout history, sheer fabrics have been a symbol of femininity and sensuality. From the sirens of old Hollywood to modern-day icons on magazine covers, women have embraced sheer fabric as a way of expressing confidence.

Beyond its aesthetic, sheer fashion represents expression and empowerment. Individuals are able to celebrate their bodies and embrace their unique beauty and individuality. Whether it's a daring sheer bodysuit or sheer-panelled dress, sheer fashion encourages individuals to embrace their curves, flaws and exude a radiating confidence.

Yeezy Season 4

Kanye West held his Yeezy Season 4 fashion show on September 7th 2016 in New York City. It was held at the beginning of New York Fashion Week to kick it off, and it didn't go so well.

The show began two hours late on Roosevelt Island, a setting underneath a sunny September sky, with a view of Manhattan on one side and the Queensborough bridge on the other.

The park, situated on the island in the East River, celebrates the four freedoms articulated by Franklin D. Roosevelt in a State of the Union address in 1941: freedom of speech, worship, from want, and fear. The decision to present a collection here came with a certain amount of responsibility- one might presume a show held here would in some way speak to issues larger than spandex and over-the-knee boots.

Instead, the event was full of secretiveness and repetition- a hour long shuttle ride, an hour long wait in the sun and the sight of amateur models, crumpling one by one underneath the heat. West sent for models via Twitter, and got himself into controversy because he mandated "multi-racial" models only.

The biggest talking point wasn't actually the clothing. Everyone was more fixated on the models, many of which collapsed under the sun or had difficulties walking in the heels. One of these models was Amina Blue, responsible for one of the shows viral moments- a video of her stopping the procession of models on the runway to take off her shoes. "They were comfortable, it was the heat from the sun," she told an interviewer. "When you're wearing plastic shoes, your feet are going to sweat. "I had half-shoes on, so they just slipped off. It was either I was going to fall, or I was going to take my shoes off. The show has to go on."

Meanwhile, Kanye's collaborator Vanessa Beecroft, the artist responsible for the choreography of past Yeezy collection and the Yeezus tour, had an opposite take on why models fainted during the show. "That's a production issue not related to me. Im not sure why people fainted yesterday, but in my case, when it has happened in my performances, it's the level of emotional stress.... It wasn't physical. The situation is so intense and people are looking at you and you are standing."

MeToo is a social movement and awareness campaign against sexual abuse, harassment, and rape culture, in which people publicise their experiences of sexual abuse or harassment.

Following the exposure of various sexual-abuse allegations against film producer Harvey Weinstein in October 2017, the movement became viral as a hashtag- the hashtag was used as a way to draw attention to the magnitude of the issue and create strength in numbers. A number of high-profile posts and responses from American celebs such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Judd, Jennifer Lawrence and Uma Thurman soon followed after the rise of the posts. Widespread media coverage and discussion of harassment, particularly focused in Hollywood, led to terminations of high-profile positions as well as criticism and backlash.

A fashion show inspired by the MeToo social media campaign aiming to expose sexual misconduct across the US opened in February 2018 with models sporting angel wings handcuffed to men in pig masks. The show was a creation by Myriam Chalek, creative director of fashion website American Wardrobe. To the pace of music, women from several paths of life first strutted down the catwalk to display designer clothing, then reappeared handcuffed to male models wearing pig masks.

Since October 2018, hundreds of women accused powerful men in business, politics, media and entertainment of sex abuse, joining the movement.

In the fashion world, allegation's also came from men, The New York Times reported that two dozen male models and assistants working with high-powered fashion photographers Bruce Weber and Mario Testino say they were subject to molestation, sexual advances and nudity.

'Highland Rape' is the most controversial show of McQueen's early career. Whilst McQueen claimed the shows inspiration was about England's rape of Scotland, critics were convinced that it was romanticising the rape of women.

Lee sent models down the runway in torn clothing, posing in an uncomfortable way which lead to viewers believing the models were portraying women who had been raped, however McQueen maintained that he was not a misogynist and the historical reference had been misunderstood.

McQueen was clearly tired of designers romanticising Scotland which he saw in a colder light. He slashed lines into the pieces, and tore apart lace in a way that expressed how much Scotland and its people were affected by the wars. He characterised the phrase 'Highland Rape' as referring to England's historical 'assaults' upon his home of Scotland

A podcast is a series of spoken word/audio episodes, all focused on a particular theme or topic. You can listen and subscribe with an app on your phone, and listen to episodes whenever you like on your headphones, or through speakers.

BBC Radio 4 have run a radio show called 'More or Less: Behind the Stats', all about economics and numbers. The show is on at the same time every week, and you have to tune in in the radio to listen. However, to make it easier to listen to when convenient, BBC publish every episode as part of the 'More or Less' podcast and organise them into a podcast series.

There isn't a pre-determined length, format, style, production level, or anything else. Podcasts can be broken up into seasons like a TV show, or be by episode and ongoing. A weekly release is common, but there are daily podcasts, weekly podcasts, and really any other time frame the creator wants.

Podcasts are relatively cheap and easy to produce on your own. You don't need to rely on radio stations for recording and broadcasting, and you can talk about anything that is of interest to you.

Celebs such as Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, and bands like NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys wore the trending fashion of the 2000's and were all the carried the trends.

Fashion trends inspired by the early noughts have repeatedly returned in recent years, proving this eras fashion cannot be shaken. As Gen Z satisfy their craving for nostalgia, styles not seen for years have reappeared on social media, and in cases, on the catwalk. Google's data further proved that the crazes of the 2000's haven't ended- searches for Y2K trends reached record heights in 2023.

-Ballet flats

These were the shoe for years on end, so many of us loved these until they became terribly out of fashion. As a staple across mainstream and subcultures, the ballet flats always had one thing in common- they could go anywhere. From dance floors to the office, and even the runway, these shoes were flexible for any occasion.

-Graphic tees

It is impossible to think of Y2K fashion without thinking of graphic tees. Britney Spears's "Dump Him' and Paris Hilton's "Stop Being Desperate" tops remain some of the most iconic and relevant of the era. Not only were these slogan shirts ways of expression pre-social media, but during an era where celebs were more seen than heard, people could meet their dreams of feeling like the celebs with their iconic lines printed on their clothes.

Styling graphic tees can be ridiculously simple:

. With boxer shorts and Gazelle trainers creates a sporty and warm outfit for spring days

. With loose jeans and a cardigan- the loose denim is practical and relaxed, and the combo is convenient for days of errands and casual get togethers.

. With tall boots and a mini skirt acts as a comfortable and girly combo.

. With cropped jeans and ankle boots is a comfortable and nostalgic combo. Finish with a shoulder bag and some ankle boots and this will keep the look interesting and current.

-Holes and cutouts

There's nothing better than showing off a hint of skin. Fashion icons like Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa are big fans of cutouts and these revealing dresses continue to pop up everywhere. Once associated with clubbing nights and rebellious teenagers, the concept of cutouts has been revisited and redesigned through the lens of fashion.

There was undoubtedly a time where cutouts were a controversial trend, although models and celebs have recently embraced these pieces, such as Bella Hadid wearing black, low-rise trousers with hip cutouts with a simple black tank top and bralette.

At the beginning of the project I initially planned to film and edit a series of podcasts that featured conversations about all things fashion, including ins and outs of the new year, the best marketing campaigns so far, and clothing items from previous eras that are making a return.

I began to film these episodes with my peer and best friend Ellie Gardner, and we were bale to complete two of these in one session and I took these back to be edited. We were successful in discussing the chosen topics and talking in depth about our opinions about the trends and pieces, leaving me with 2 episodes, both around 30-40 mins long.

However time became a slight restraint as editing these episodes was taking me longer than I expected due to factors such as not being at college for a few days and being unable to edit at home due to not having the software available.

As a result of this, I discussed options with my lecturer and we decided on me creating a zine/booklet that will embody all of the research I have collected into an informative piece that would be useful and enjoyed by the current generations that take an interest into the world of fashion and want to know how to style themselves.

The booklet will include a variety of images, some taken from fashion websites to use as examples for the pieces I am talking about in each section. I may also include images I have already taken in previous shoots from projects in the past if relevant. Each section will additionally include text which talks about the given topic and will inform and give advice to audiences on things such as the best pieces right now, and what to avoid when thinking of what to wear.

Barbara Kruger was born in 1945 in Newark, New Jersey. She briefly attended Syracuse University, then Parsons School of Design in NYC, where she studied with artists Marvin Israel and Diane Arbus. Kruger worked in graphic design at Mademoiselle magazine and was promoted to head designer at the age of 22. She described her time in graphic design as the 'biggest influence' on her work.

In the early 70's, Kruger starting showing work in galleries in New York. At this time, she was mostly working in weaving and painting. In 1976, she stopped creating art at all for an entire year. When it got to 1977, she began making work again in a different style of photo and text collages. In 1979, Kruger developed her signature style using large-scale black-and-white images overlaid with text. She repurposed found images, juxtaposing them with short phrases printed in black, white, or red text bars. In addition to creating text and photographic works, Kruger has produced video and audio works, taught classes, designed products, bus wraps, and architectural interventions.

Kruger addresses media and politics in a sensational, authoritative and direct way. Personal pronouns such as 'you' and 'I' are staples within her work practices, bringing the viewer into each of her pieces. "Direct address has motored my work from the very beginning. I like it because it cuts through the grease." Kruger's work prompts us to interrogate our own positions- "to question and change the systems that contain us." She demands that we consider how our identities are formed within culture, through language and image representation.

Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the cover of the Oasis album Stop the Clocks.

Blake was born in Dartford, UK, and rose to fame in the 1950's. He produced paintings with the feel of a collage, and his pieces included images from published works, advertisements and music hall entertainment. One of Blake's significant early works was On the Balcony; the painting appears to be a collage, but it was actually produced with oil paint on a wooden panel- this piece features British school children, famous works of art, and popular magazines.

His early training as a graphic designer coupled with rich education allowed him to blend his obsessions with new youthful pop culture and the pop music scene in swinging London with art references from the past into a form of urban realism. This challenged the idea about what constituted art and broke down barriers between traditional fine art and the new field of Pop. He continued to make work that gave respectful nods to the past yet which remained equally focused on the future, reflecting man's ongoing experience of being prone to the external influences of past, present, and future.

UAL Extended Diploma in Art and Design- Photography

Name: Olivia Miles-Tomlins

Title: The Fashion Handbook

Olivia’s work mainly focuses on the fashion industry, and its progression throughout time and how it is currently changing. Olivia has conducted in-depth research into the history of how, over eras such as the 50s-80s, pieces have risen to fame and disappeared.

Her booklet serves as a guide to the evolving landscape of trends and fashion taste and expression. As an artist deeply interested in the world of style, she recognises fashion not only as a way of dressing, but the power of it besides this- a form of self-expression and significant in culture, particularly in recent times.

The process of creating this booklet involved research into subjects such as the history and development of fashion, and analysis of fashion trends, historical influences and modern styles, ensuring the content of her work is not only informative but interesting and inspiring. The visual elements of her final work were crafted using a combination of majority graphic design, and her own photography, adding a personal touch to the advice offered and connecting creative and audience.

Through her fashion handbook, she aspires to inspire readers and fashion minds alike to explore their style and its potential, experiment with different looks, and help them find themselves through how they dress. Creation of the handbook stemmed from a fascination with fashion, and not just about the materialism- by sharing her knowledge about past and current fashion pieces, she hopes to inspire others to dig deeper into their personal style and find joy & confidence in themselves and how they dress. Ultimately, this project reflects how she wants fashion to be understandable, accessible and enjoyable for everyone, and how it can be used to express yourself and as a representation of individuality for everyone.
