Thinking a lot about the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Civil Rights movement and how MLK Jr said that the "negro's" great stumbling block is the White American moderate. I've been reading about white antiracist spiritual leaders who were very active during the civil rights movement and also "reactionary centrists" and it is just making me really angry about the widespread (esp. White) idea that centrism and "creating space for all perspectives" is a virtue. During the civil rights movement, radical politics were relatively common and necessary. When did radical politics become so scary to white folx? Why would I want to create space for any perspective that just serves to uphold the oppressive systems we are living in? The nonprofit industrial complex relies on the centrism of complacent white folx who want to "help" without taking any real risks that would actually create change.
