Japan invades China

The rise of Chinese nationalism threatened Japan's control over Manchuria (a Japanese territory in China). Tensions between China and Japan continued to worsen, which eventually lead to Japan's full-scale attack on China. This was Japan's first major act of aggression during WWII, and marked the beginning of WWII reaching Asia. After seeing the severe aggression and destruction Japan was capable of, Europe and the U.S saw Japan as a threat and worried Japan would continue to seize territories and cause destruction.

Japan, Germany, and Italy sign the Tripartite pact.

One year after the start of WWII, officials from Germany, Italy and Japan meet in Berlin and agree to create a joint defense alliance. The Tripartite pact states that these countries will "assist one another with all political, economic, and military means." The pact represents a signifiant change, as the Axis powers shift from independently fighting, to being a part of a united alliance.

Pearl Harbor

Located in Oahu, Hawaii, Pearl Harbor was one of the most important American naval bases in the Pacific. At 7:55 am on December 7th, the Japanese navy launched the first of two waves of the surprise aerial attack on Pearl Harbor. This attack was severely brutal and destructive. 2,400 U.S soldiers and sailors were killed, and 1,200 were wounded. In addition to these causalities, the attack resulted in a long period of worsening relations between the U.S and Japan, and it signals a turning point for U.S involvement in WWII.

U.S declares war on Japan

A day after Japan's brutal and shocking attack on the U.S, FDR officially declares war on Japan and joins WWII. Before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the U.S had been trying to avoid participating in the war. However, after this severe attack, and Hitler declaring war on the U.S, they had no choice but to join the war. This decision dramatically changed the course of the war and shifted the scales.

British and U.S navies stop the Japanese navy in the Pacific (at the island of Midway)

This event signals a turning point for both the Japanese and the Allied powers. This is the first time the Japanese face a loss, and their streak of rapid and unchecked gains is broken. This brings Japan's morale and confidence (which had been very high) down, and gives the Allied powers hope.

The Allied Powers conquer Okinawa

Similarly to the Japanese navy being stoped at Midway, the Allied powers conquering Okinawa signals a decline for the Japanese and hope for the Allied powers. More specifically, this event signals the first time the Allied powers were able to reach mainland Japan. One of Japan's biggest assets in the war was their isolated location. Before this event, the Allied powers had only reached islands off the coast of Japan. Conquering Japanese territory, especially in mainland Japan, gave the Allied powers more hope and confidence, and threatened Japan's preceding security.
