The association believes that the key to educating America is by having a strong public education system that provides a top notch education to all Americans.

The information on school safety and the effect it not only has on a child's physical health but also their emotional health. The information discussed the educators responsibilities in ensuring their physical safety as well as their emotional health.

An area of ethical concern that the website delved into was that of poverty. Poverty affects students level of success daily across America. One of the many articles that covered by this area talked about how understanding what your students are going through who are dealing with poverty is one way you can better serve those students.

The effects poverty has on student success is an issue close to home. I grew up in a very poor house where our family received welfare, and food stamps for many years. School was never the most important thing in our lives, food and a place to live were the things we worried about most. The military taught me how important education is while also providing me an avenue of paying for that education. Serving as an educator I have always believed strongly that it was part of all educators jobs to help mitigate those circumstances when they effect students that we work with.

Conducting research on the effects of poverty I found that there has been a proven connection between poverty and the lack of success in school. "In its 2016 report, The Condition of Education, the National Center for Education Statistics attributed living in poverty during early childhood, in part, to lower levels of academic performance" (Taylor, May 2017). The two sources I utilized as my research showed that poverty effected a students ability to achieve in a myriad of ways.

The average American can not understand what the effect of poverty does to students. One way students are effected is through insufficient nutrition. In 2004 12% of all households were considered food insecure. Food insecure families are those who do not have access to enough food to live an active, healthy lifestyle. (Prince, Pepper, Brocato, Aug 2006).

The issue of poverty is one that should concern all Americans. We live in the richest country in the world yet we have kids going to sleep hungry. The outcomes of students in a poverty situation are critical to all of us because we have a system that creates limits for a large portion of society. As educational leaders we will most assuredly have students who are facing these situations in some varying of degree.

While planning to serve as a school leader in the town of San Angelo Texas It is important to know your community. Currently San Angelo has 14.7% population living below the poverty line (www.datausa.io, Aug 2018). Preparing to move and lead in a school system with a large population of families in poverty it is critical to understand the varying ways it effects student achievement. Using my research and personal experience hopefully this will give me the tools necessary to develop a course of action to alleviate this issue with the students and families I will serve.
