Cuba was first colonized by Spain in the 15th century. They brought people from Africa and made them into slaves working in Cuba. All rights and manpower were taken away from the indigenous people. Sooner or later wars started to erupt which meant Cuba finally had the chance to be free. The Spanish American War began leading America at victory. With that, America took Cuba under its wings and thus Cuba’s independence began. On the 10th of October 1868, Cuba was officially free and led by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. https://www.cubahistory.org/en/spanish-settlement/slavery-and-rebellion-in-cuba.html

Today, it’s not that easy being a citizen of Cuba. There are many controversial problems and the needs or wants of Cubans that are always overlooked by the leaders of Cuba. Specifically the situations that talk about all the necessary things that are prohibited in Cuba. For instance, the freedom of using the internet. We as a whole in this world use the internet for so much. Research for school/ work, publishing, selling/creating businesses, learning basic information, freedom of expression, entertainment, news, and many more are all positive and important ways people use the internet. These are also the reasons why citizens of Cuba are fighting for it but like the majority of their fights or protests, they get declined from the government of Cuba. In 2009, Cuba’s internet censorship was created by the Cuban government. This problem affects the people of Cuba today because it’s a reminder to them about how controlled Cuba is. Cuba makes it at number 10 of the most censored countries and within all those countries, they are highly controlled. https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2021/country-chapters/cuba

Connection to Colonialism

The modern unresolved issue of the Need for and impact of innovation in Cuba is having the lack of rights or say in many situations which is due to colonialism because Cuba always ran that way. Back in colonialism, Cuban’s or back then the indigenous people of the island of Hispaniola were being manipulated as soon as the Spanish colonizers set sail. They were taken all rights/ power and were no longer free in their own land. Just like then, Cuba seems to be following that same mindset of a country that should always be in control of their people and tell them what or what not to do. Need for and Impact of Innovation is the enduring issue relating to this situation the most because the need for people’s freedom of expression needs to be granted to them. ‘’The government controls virtually all media outlets in Cuba and restricts access to outside information. The government routinely blocks access within Cuba to many news websites and blogs.’’ Simple things we can easily access are blocked in Cuba and it’s unfair. As a result, I think colonialism affected the ways that leadership is portrayed in Cuba today. https://www.cubahistory.org/en/sugar-boom-a-slavery.html
