Principle 6. Assessment must be an integral part of mathematics instruction. by Jennifer Carillo

Mathematics teachers must realize the
importance of the role of assessment in
improving the teaching-learning process. It is crucial that teachers recognize the alignment of curriculum, instruction and assessment. Thus, it is necessary to ensure that the goals of the curriculum are achieved through appropriate instructional strategies and assessment. This can be done if teachers constantly reflect on
their teaching, that is, analyze whether what
was intended to be taught has actually been taught and learned by the students. Moreover, instruction can be diagnostic in nature. It can be designed to help identify misconceptions. It can provide learning experiences that allow students to attain conceptual change and maximize learning. Consequently, assessment is integrated
into the teaching process.

This principle, in my opinion, speaks to the significance of assessment in math instruction. In order to make sure that the students comprehend the concepts and ideas being taught to them, assessments are given after the lessons are delivered, making assessment a crucial component of the teaching-learning process. Other than that, since the students' performance is so usually associated to your delivery, we educators may also gauge how well we did in our presentation by evaluating how well they performed. Assessing student progress as part of the teaching process involves more than just tracking student development; it may also be used to measure your own potential as a competent teacher.

This principle focuses on how important assessment is in Mathematics instruction. In teaching Mathematics, the teacher must recognize and follow the alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The teacher must make sure that the target goals of the curriculum are achieved through appropriate instructional strategies and assessment. It can help teachers determine whether the concepts of Mathematics are achieved by the learners as they got the point of what the teacher taught to them. By that, the teacher also can figure out whether he discussed and presented the idea that is being taught. Therefore, in order to evaluate the learner's knowledge of that particular topic, there must be an assessment proper to be done.

This principle informs us that improving the teaching and learning of mathematics requires evaluation. Teachers use assessment to help them design effective lessons for pupils. Additionally, assessments aid teachers in understanding what went well and poorly in their classes. For instance, if the class's average test score was lower than anticipated, the teacher would know that something wasn't clicking with the kids. In this situation, it enables the teacher modify the way the material was previously taught and use alternative methods to teach the same material. This will also make it easier for professors to give feedback on students' progress, let them know when they've made mistakes, and suggest ways to fix them. In order for our students to do better on assessments, we as teachers must also ensure that the lessons we teach them are delivered in an efficient manner.

Assessment is a systematic basis for making inferences about the learning and development of students. We all know that some student won't understand mathematics easily and they probably ashame to tell it, assessment is very helpful to evaluate whether our student really understand the lesson well and we could know that the teaching approaches and strategies that we used in teaching mathematics is effective. It helps teachers to make alternative approaches and strategies in teaching student effectively.

In this principle, assessment is really significant in teaching-learning process. It is the means by which we determine what students know and can do. It tells something about what students have learned; like for example mathematical terms they recognize and can use, the procedures they can carry out, the kind of mathematical thinking they do, the concepts they understand, and the problems they can formulate and solve. It provides information that can be used to award grades, to evaluate a curriculum, or to decide whether the students is good at that topic. As a teacher, we should properly evaluate the learners so that we know what are their weaknesses and strengths. This is the way in teaching-learning effectively.

In this principle, assessment has given importance since it is to know whether your teaching strategy and techniques used in teaching are useful or not.If the assessment is not really good then a teacher must change something in her style or way of teaching but if the assessment of the students will went well, then teachers can really identify that his/her strategy being used is effective.

For me, this principle tells us that in the teaching and learning process, assessment is vital. It is an integral part of instruction, as it determines whether or not the goals of education are being met. It inspires us to ask these hard questions: "Are we teaching what we think we are teaching?" "Are students learning what they are supposed to be learning?" "Is there a way to teach the subject better, thereby promoting better learning?" Teachers need to identify what his/her students mastered and not. Through assessments, students will be given a chance to improve themselves based on the results and we, teachers at the same time will be having an opportunity to know where our students need more attention and need better instruction. Gauging students' learnings from the instructions makes difference. We will be able to help them to do better and get better outcomes. As future teachers, we may take note that assessing our student's progress is not just beneficial for us but for them as well. Therefore, choose those assessments which are credible and timely relevant.

Through assessment also, the teaching process will improve. The assessment also serves as a reflection of the teachers if their teaching process was a success or a failure. They can also perform diagnostic test to identify the learners weak points that are needed to accentuate. Also, assessment can be done through written and oral. Furthermore, when conducting an assessment, the teacher must make sure that the contents of his/her exams are related to their discussion. They cannot turn haywire especially elementary students. They are too literal in everything that they answer what they have read in books or had listened into the discussion. That is why, assessment is designed to improve students learnings and avoid confusions and misconceptions.
