Cyprus

The image I chose for Cyprus shows it divided into two parts, Northern Cyprus with its corresponding flag, a self-declared state recognized only by Turkey with cultural ties to the state, and Southern Cyprus, with the generally recognized flag of Cyprus. I chose this image because I knew very little about Cyprus except for the Greek and Turkish divide among Cypriots and the separate administration of the Northern portion (also known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus).

Hijaz

The image here is a map of the spread of the Kingdom of Hijaz, as Padlet seems to only let you mark with a pinpoint instead of an area map. Understanding the land mass of a government's administration seems to be the best way to represent it in a singular picture. The pinpoint marked here is at the Kingdom's most recent capital, Jeddah (1924-25), although it was Mecca for most of the Kingdom's existence.

Constantinople

Pictured is the Hagia Sophia, located in modern-day Istanbul, former Constantinople. Considering that the prompt was Constantinople, I assumed including an image of a building that predates Istanbul as the name was appropriate. It is a current Mosque and former church, dating to 360 CE.

Kingdom of Hungary

This image is of the Kingdom of Hungary's spread in 1190. It is mapped here at one of its first capitals, Esztergom. Yet again, when dealing with something as large as a kingdom, I assumed the best representation of it was of its historical spread.

Indus

Pictured here is Mohenjo Daro, an archeological sight located in the Indus River Valley region, modern-day India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Mohenjo Daro was the largest settlement of the Indus River Valley civilization and using an image of it calls to some of the historical significance of that society. I assume the significance of mapping the region is in its historical context of being one of the first civilizations, so a picture of an archeological site was appropriate.

Marrakesh

This image is of a Souk (market) in Marrakesh. I chose this photo because it reminds me of other large outdoor marketplaces I have visited and because many of the pictures that appear when you search Marrakesh are of its markets. The outdoor market space with incredibly varied goods seems to be a cultural consistency. I have no idea if this image is actually representative of Marrakesh, as I have very little background knowledge, but it is a very pretty image.

This image is of a map of the actual spread of Rub' al Khali, because Padlet's mapping service only has pinpoints. I chose this image because it seemed to be more representative of the area than what I can show on the map.

This image is actually of Rub' al Khali. An image of the what the Empty Quarter actually looks like also seemed to be necessary. Along with understanding its geographical scope is understanding what Rub' al Khali actually refers to.

Fez

This is an image of Bab Bou Jeloud, an ornate gate located in the old city of Fez in Morocco. I chose this image in large part because it is pretty, yet again I don't have any prior experience with Fez and thus don't have a great amount of knowledge on how to represent it, and because it shows people communicating in the background. The image both presents an attractive aesthetic feature and a look into the daily life of the city's inhabitants.

Edessa

This image is of a citadel in Edessa (modern-day Şanlıurfa/Urfa). Considering the use of the historic name of Edessa, I assumed that using a picture that reflects this history was the most appropriate option. This area was once a part of Mesopotamia.

Tyre

This is a photo of the port of the city of Tyre in Lebanon. I chose this picture because it both gives an outline of the landmass of the city and also allows the viewer some look into its architecture and setup. Tourism seems to be centered around easy access to the Mediterranean sea.
