The History Of The Circle

When introduced to the circle of fifths I wanted to ask why it was used and where it came from. Below is information I discovered about this and its origin.

In order to help compose my composition I have been looking at the circle of fifths to begin to develop understand which notes go together and the importance of keys. I have found this very helpful as I have little experience in playing the piano. I wondered who and why the circle of fifths was made, and in my research I discovered a Greek Philosopher came up with it, for people like myself, by discovering which pitch frequencies went well together. This was originally called the Pythagorean Circle , however is now better known as the circle of fifths or the circle of fourths.

The circle from my research using the websites below, is very much a Western Theory. This is because it uses the chromatic scale. The chromatic scale refers to 12 notes you can see below which all have different pitches.

The circle of fifths is a useful tool when doing a composition as it shows the key signatures that go together and can be useful when building melodies.
http://www.dummies.com/art-center/music/the-circle-of-fifths-a-brief-history/
http://www.hearandplay.com/main/why-the-circle-of-fourths-is-so-important-when-learning-major-scales
http://www.guitarhabits.com/how-to-benefit-from-the-circle-of-fifths-and-fourths/

Understanding The Circle Of Fifths and Application

Once I had looked at where the circle of fifths came from and its uses. I decided to further my knowledge and understanding to look into the actual application on how to use the circle. I found the video below a very useful tool when doing this.

A fifth refers to going up seven semi-tones or half steps as he referred to it as. Therefore if at C and go up seven semitones ( a fifth) you will reach G, and then again another fifth will get you you D. This gradually helps construct the order of the circle and their neighbouring numbers.

A chord is a set of notes that you play together at the same time. Sticking to your key is important to remain harmonically correct and playing notes outside your key is refereed to as modulation which can make the piece not sound as pleasing to the ear.

This video has taught me a significant amount. I had heard in lessons the word 'tonic' used, however never knew what this actually meant. The tonic refers to the first and last note of a chord. It is crucial when finishing a chord or song that your return to the tonic. In my composition I have taken this into my mind by always going back to where I started from in the piano baseline.
