When Rome made arches they were originally from Greece but they pretty much stole them but sort of made them POP! When they made arches they would make big, thick, curved, tall arches, but when they were done they carved beautiful designs that would blow your mind, or atin phrases/ words. They were truly beautiful. Tall-standing, and just so beautiful it just totally amazes me. From then to now arches have come so far from ancient times to now. Now, arches look nothing like they did thousands of years ago. Then, they were big and fat; now, they are thin and tall. Then, they had words/phrases in Latin; now, they have nothing on them...no room. Here is a picture of a before and after for arches (from then to now.):

In Ancient Rome, they used stone, wood, ceramics, metal, and terracotta. With stone, they were very good at quarrying it and using different for different types of buildings. For example, marble would be for surface decorations, granite would be used for objects subjected to great stress. They would use Terra cotta anything from tiling to waterproofing, Now, when we think of terra cotta, we think of the statues in China. Wood is used for floors, ceilings, and most machinery in war. The ancient Roman architect named Vitruvius made different designs that he thought he would use trees for, and how to cut down the trees correctly. They used Acacia, Cork Wood, Silver Birch, and Field Maple. Now our wood is mostly just pine. We use pine for most building material because it is easy to grow and it grows very fast.

In Ancient Rome, when they made buildings or different structures, they were very different in many different ways. They made structures like arches, baths, domes, libraries, houses, markets, mausoleums, and temples. The arches, temples, and domes were just decorations mostly but sometimes monuments. The markets and libraries were usually for entertainment or food. Now, most of the building types are the same as the Ancient Romans. Our Arches, like the St. Louis Arch, are just usually decorations, and the markets(grocery stores) and libraries are for entertainment and food.

Construction Methods

One of the main things about Ancient Roman construction methods is that when you are making an arch, it HAS to be able to withstand its surroundings. With construction, it has to be held up by its surroundings, no matter what. Like, for example, the arch, it has its surroundings to keep it held up, but for one single arch, it is thick and wide, therefore, holding it up. But domes, they aren't so simple, if they didn't have support, they would implode. Domes are pretty much a house of cards, if you don't support it right, it will fall. This is because the domes were made of solid types of rock like sandstone. Now, domes are made of thick glass.
