According to Dr. Reynolds, the main reason why Martin Luther King Jr.'s nonviolent strategies were seen as "embarrassing the country" was because of the unfavorable impression they gave of the US, especially in light of the civil rights movement and the international political scene. This viewpoint emphasizes the conflict between King's ethically motivated strategy for denouncing racial injustice and the national purpose in preserving a favorable worldwide reputation during a period of profound social change.

Reynolds says that Dr. King's nonviolent tactics were "embarrassing the country" because he felt that they didn't do enough especially when you consider what the racists were doing to them. Despite the nonviolent and peaceful approach that Black people were taking White supremacists still responded with violence and when Dr. King continued to not fight back and let it happen this is what "embarrassed the country." People like Malcom X believed that if they were dealing with violence they should fight back with violence and take authority rather than constantly being beat down. He wanted power for his people and thought that Dr. Kings tactics weren't enough.

W.E.B. Du Bois became an antiracist socialist because he saw racism and capitalism as interconnected systems that oppressed Black people and other marginalized groups. Initially focused on racial injustice, he later recognized how economic inequality reinforced racial hierarchies, pushing him toward socialism as a solution for true equality. His experiences globally also highlighted that Black liberation was tied to a broader struggle for workers’ rights, anti-imperialism, and social justice. He believed socialism offered a path to dismantle both racial and economic oppression by fostering solidarity across racial and national lines.
