I used this book in ELED 303 last semester and it is an incredible book. This bilingual story is made up of different testimonies surrounding children detained on the US-Mexico border. Not only can it be used as a great introduction for the topic of immigration but it can also be relatable to students who might have migrated to them United States. This book is a great resource for students to understand that students come from different parts of the world and how to best support this.

The goal for many of my future lessons is to make them as collaborative and hands-on as possible. Therefore, this layout allows for this to happen. I chose individual desks instead of a full desk because this also allows students to separate during tests or other scenarios.

Rules, routines, and procedures are important in the classroom because they set expectations and a balance for students. These rules will be set and explained at the beginning of the school year. They will also be displayed on a poster posted at the front of the classroom.

Rules
- Treat everyone how you want to be treated: If students want everyone to treat them with kindness and respect then they also need to treat everyone with respect. This means classmates, teachers, and other staff in the school.

- Be an attentive listener: Listening is the key to becoming a better learner, therefore, students need to learn to attentively listen to what is going on in the classroom. This includes listening to the teacher when providing instruction as well as listening to other classmates when they are speaking.

- Ask questions when you have them: This is a rule that I wish more teachers encouraged. Students should not be afraid to ask questions when they have them. Learning is an active process and students can only learn if they actively engage in it.

Routines & Procedures

- Morning Check-ins: Students will be greeted at the door by the teacher. There will be a choice of four things to do (handshake, fist bump, high five, or hug). The one they choose is how they will greet their teacher.

- Non-Verbal cues when students need to move anywhere: If students need to drink water, they will signal a one with their finger. If students need to drink water, they will signal a two with their fingers. If students need to get up to get something from their desk or a desk, they will signal a three.

- Voice Levels: Students are expected to be on the voice level based on their environment. If students work independently or the teacher is talking then students are expected to be at a 0. If students are doing partner work, they are expected to be at a 1. If students are in small groups, they are expected to be at a 2.

- Leader Of The Day: There will be index cards with every individual student's name. On a day-by-day basis, there will a leader. This leader will be in charge of passing out papers, pencils if needed, and the leader of the line. Once a student's name has been picked, they will go to the bottom of the stack. This allows all students to get a few chances at being leaders throughout the school year.

- Position 1, 2, and 3 for transitions from desk to rug: Position 1 stands for students sitting quietly. Position 2 stands for students standing by their desks with their chairs pushed in. Position 3 stands for all students to move from their desks to the rug. Students need to complete each individual position the right way before moving on to the next one.

- Transition from desks to line up: Students will line up based on their designated table colors or number. This allows the line to maintain organized.

- Checkouts: Before the day ends, the teacher can designate the last 5-7 minutes of the school day to which students can share a positive thing about their day.

Responses To Misbehavior

1. Type of Misbehavior: Defiance

- 3 responses: Notify parents if the behavior becomes reoccurring. With parents, find out more about home life and make a plan on how to address this behavior. If this first response does not work, the second response would be to create an incentive poster on a weekly basis. This allows the teacher to keep track of the student's behavior. If it is at 80% for positivity then the student receives an award. If this next response does not work then the third response could be to create an incentive poster on a daily basis. This will encourage the behavior to be more consistent.

2. Type of Misbehavior: Group Bullying

- 3 Responses: Addressing the bullying behavior with the bullies. This includes addressing clear expectations of how to act with their classmates and the consequences of what happens if these expectations aren't met. If this response is not working, responding to this bullying at the moment that it happens is another option. This includes rearranging the classroom is necessary and losing privileges related to the bullying. The last response to this misbehavior will be to reach out to the parents of the class. Also, students will need to engage in one-on-one sessions with counselors.

3. Type of Misbehavior: Disruptive To Teacher and Peers

- 3 Responses: First attempt to respond to this behavior includes communicating with the student. The student will be able to see how frequently their disruptive behavior occurs. We will set up a signal to let the student know when they are being disruptive. If the first attempt is unsuccessful, the second response would be to use social stories and create them. Social stories are picture books that the student can see that model proper ways of behaving to him. The third attempt at this would be could be calling in with the parents. You can learn more about what might be going on in the personal lives of your students that could affect how they act if you ask their parents for help.

4. Type of Misbehavior: Aggressiveness

-3 Responses: First response would be noting what triggers the student. This also includes finding ways to calm them down. The second response would be once you have noted the triggers and see the student is attempting to get physical, stand next to the student. Make sure you make your body language non-threatening and use a calm voice. The last response would be for the student's situation to be reported to the principal, as should any school social worker, psychologist, or other mental health office staff.

5. Type of Misbehavior: ADHD Causing Disruption with Teacher

- 3 Responses: The first response to this would be to use any rewards and positive compliments to highlight positive behavior. Another response would be to give the student an alternative way to express herself. This includes having a journal where they are able to talk about their feelings. The last response would be to take this to higher-ups in the school. This includes the principal/vice principal giving the student a consequence.

Within their group, students will need to build a pyramid of cups with ten cups and one rubber band working collaboratively without talking. The goal of this community builder is for students to learn to work as a team.

-Pipeline Game: Students had to use their own pipe and work collaboratively o to move a marble into a cup without talking. If the marble was dropped then the students have to restart from the beginning. The goal of this community builder is for students to learn to work as a team.

-Balloon Activity: Students received an individual balloon and wrote their name on it. They then had to place it in the middle with the rest of the classroom. The objective of the name is for everyone to find their balloon as fast as possible. Students had three opportunities and had to collaboratively strategize as a class to beat their previous time. The goal of this community builder is for students to learn to work as a team.

-Telephone Charades: Students are placed in teams and get into vertical lines, away from the board.

1. Modeling- Modeling is important in the classroom because it shows students how to do their work. While instructions allow for direction on the assignment, modeling allows student to visually see how to do it. This is important for class management because teachers can model all of the expectations that they have for their students.

2. Feedback- Detailed feedback is important for learning. This is because it pinpoints the exact aspects that students need to improve in order to be successful. Positive feedback is also important and key to successful class management. This is because it allows students to see the positive aspects of what is seen in the classroom.

3. Cooperative learning- As mentioned in my class organization section, I want my students to be actively engaged in hands-on and collaborative activities. This allows students to learn from each other. Additionally, students will learn to respect each other's opinions.

4. Student-Led Classroom- In an active learning classroom, teachers should be a resource for learning but not the primary source. It is important for students to have a space to achieve their highest potential. This helps with classroom management because students will feel in control of the classroom, allowing them to be less disruptive.

5. Graphic Organizers- Graphic organizers are important because it visually organizes information for students. This helps students grasp new concepts better since they see them in a much more organized way.

This book reflects the differences that are found within families. Although these differences are what separate them, they are more connected than they think. This is a great book for being culturally responsive because it allows students to see the different variations of families that students might not see in their every day lives. This includes families with same-sex parents, different cultural backgrounds, foster families and even children who live with their grandparents. It teaches students the differences found throughout the world and regardless of it all, all families are about care and love.

This book is about crayons and how they each represent a different feelings. It explores different "big feelings" that students might experience and might not know how to handle. I think this book is a great addition to the classroom it is a gateway to emotional regulation. This could also be given to students who might have disruptive behavior in the classroom because of these "big feelings."

Therefore, by having popsicle sticks as options for brain breaks, one student can pick their favorite and students can do a hands-on brain break.

In the younger elementary grades, students can reference the alphabet as well as identify the sound of the beginning of the word based on what they already know about the letter. Constantly being surrounded by that visual is important for learning sounds and remembering the definition of the word.

Pull Out Library Bins

In my library section, I would like to have these bins that students can pull out when they navigate the library. At first, the library baskets were not visually appealing to me. However, after watching the video in week 6, the teacher in the video mentioned how much easier it was to pull them out – it made sense and that is something I would like to include in my future classroom. Additionally, since I will be a bilingual teacher, I would have different color bins assigned to different languages of books. In my previous clinical classroom, red bins meant Spanish books, blue books were books in English, and black bins were bilingual books.
