Patterns in Nature

This is a photograph of several leaves. Though they are simply just leaves, together they create a repeating patter throughout the photo. Using my 70-300mm lens with a low aperture, I created a close up photo of leaves with a dynamic field of depth; it made the leaves look larger than they really were. When it came to the post production, simply added more contrast to support the field of depth, and created more vibrance and added a green hue to really exaggerate the green in this photo. Though some leaves had specs or rips, I decided to keep that in to really keep the authentic that nature does have patterns, however nature is not a perfect pattern; every leaf is unique in its own way.

Portrait of an Artist

This is a photo of Darlyn Torres, a photography student. I decided to photograph her whilst in the act of her art, and so this is a candid photo of her capturing photos of her unique environment. Applying the rule of thirds, I created a unique contrast between her and her scenery. Though I would typically decrease the aperture to create a stronger field of depth, I felt as though the scenery with the painted-over graffiti was too unique to dismiss. For the post editing process, I cropped the photo a bit to assure that there was no dead space and increased the contrast and vibrancy to make everything more dynamic. The shot itself was pretty perfect as is, and so not much editing was needed; mainly small touches.

This is a photograph of the cap of my sister, who had just graduated, with the "23" representing the year. Though graduating is the end of your education, it's just the beginning of the real world; the beginning of real life. This was taken with my 18-70mm lens and had me zoom in on her cap while she was talking to a relative. I made sure to use a low aperture due to the very busy and distracting scene we were in, making sure to keep only my subjects in focus. The post production of this shot had me using masking effects to enhance the focus of my subject, and I decided to change the color scheme of the photo to monochrome to create less distraction from the scenery.

When I envision an awakening, I often imagine someones eyes being in focus; as if something has come into realization for them. In this shot, I had my model stare directly into the camera, with a mask over their face to focus on just their eyes. Though I would have had them widen their eyes, I saw that concept as a little tacky; I wanted it to feel natural. To me, he looks as if he has discovered something that has created him anew, however he still remains intact and controlled. For the post production of this shot, I decided to exaggerate the blacks of the photo to create a stronger contrast and to bring less attention to the background.

When I envision an extreme contrast, I typically think absolute opposites; red and green, orange and blue, yellow and purple, and notoriously, black and white. For this shot, I prepared a white backdrop with two light sources (one to the models left, one to the models right) to provide the perfect lighting condition. I had my subject wear an all black outfit opposed to editing the photograph into monochrome to avoid any grey; I wanted black and white- extreme contrast, no in between. For the post production, I decided to increase the white and blacks of the photo, along with the contrast. I also decreased the vibrance in the photo to soften the color of my subject.

I shot this photo with my 18-55mm lens and with settings a bit too dark to give a little bit of a silhouette to my subject; I wanted to focus more on the sky opposed to the clarity of the subject. For the post production, I wanted to really give the sky a strong blue coloring and increase the contrast between the sky and my subject.

When I think of a rush, I typically think of something going fast; I think of speed. For this photograph, I had my subject running the track. I wanted to capture them in motion whilst applying leading lines and the rule of thirds to give the viewer an idea of what they're running for. Due to the quite distracting background, I had decided to use a low aperture increase focus on my subject and decrease focus on the scenery, whilst still allowing for the viewer to understand it. For the post production, I simply made simple corrections.

When it comes to athleticism, I believe that teamwork is one of the most important things. In this photograph, I have one subject lifting a weight while the other subject is "spotting" them (the act of supporting another person during a particular exercise). For this shot, I used a 18-55mm lens with a low shutter speed to insure that I could capture my subjects movement as successfully as possibly. For the post production of this photo, I simply used the masking too to balance out the lighting in the photo and bring more focus to my subjects opposed to the slightly distracting background.

When I think of something old and something new, I think of a refill; when we run out of an essential, we simply buy a new one. This photograph displays two bottles of a fragrance, one finished, with a little trace of the orange fluid, whilst the other is filled with said orange fluid. The new bottle is in focus, however the old bottle is still visible, displaying a more "in with the new, out with the old" dynamic. For the post production of this photo, I really wanted to create a darker background and properly display the color of the fragrance; I accomplished this by increasing the contrast and vibrance up significantly. I also used the erase tool to remove the logo of the fragrance bottle, as I found it a bit too distracting.

In this photo we see my subject looking at a reflection in the water. Opposed to taking a photo of someone looking at their reflection, I captured a photo of someone looking at a reflection of their environment. I added depth to my photo by shooting with a low aperture, and applying the rule of thirds to turn such a simple shot into something more. When it came to the post production, I wanted to give the reflection a bit of a sinister look whilst making my subject more light-shined. Using the masking tool in light room and increasing the contrast and shadows of the background whilst increase the highlights of my subject helped create the perfect photograph.

I wanted to display Zuriel looking through his glasses, but opposed to him being the focused subject, I wanted it to be the glasses he looks through. I used a 18-55mm lens for this shot with a low aperture to create a field of depth that enhances the glasses.

This is a photograph of this plant, infested with these black specs. When I first saw this, I was taken aback. It appears as though these little specs are destroying the plant. For this shot, I used my 70-300mm lens with a low aperture to really zoom in and enhance on this small infected plant, and only the plant. For the post production I decided to increase the contrast to really show the contrast between the plant and its poison. I also increased the green hue on the photo and created a masking effect to bring less attention to the background.

I was simply being one with nature, when I noticed the liter that was left in front of me, and decided to photograph it. Since I don't have any dead animals of any sort, I decided to photograph these unfortunate flowers that were dying in my living room. For the shot, I really wanted to display the detail of the crumbling roses; I wanted to exaggerate its decaying state, I needed the viewer to understand that this is really the end. To achieve this fully, I also edited the photo to have low vibrance. Pulling the color away from the greens really helped play into the lifelessness of the plant. I had a high contrast and a slightly under exposed edit to show how tragic this sight is; I wanted to capture the sorrow sight in the most tragic way possible.
