Mais à longueur d’albums, le dessinateur français a également mis en scène une grande diversité de paysages urbains. Nourri au départ par la foi dans le progrès et la modernité des années 1960-1970, il s’est plutôt attaché à dessiner des sociétés postapocalyptiques faites d’anarchie, de violence et de bizarreries, le tout dans des décors souvent désertiques. Dans La Cité Saturne (2006), la mangaka japonaise Hisae Hiwoka imagine que la planète Terre est devenue une zone protégée à laquelle les humains n’ont plus accès. Ces derniers vivent désormais dans un immense anneau urbain, un tube flottant en orbite à 35 000 km autour de la planète. Les humains y vivent sur trois niveaux, en fonction de leur rang social. Surtout, la ville imaginée par Iwoka est le symbole d’un mode de vie artificiel, loin du cadre naturel offert par la Terre : seuls les plus riches ont accès à la lumière du soleil, les autres devant recréer artificiellement le vent, les étoiles et les ressources végétales terrestres.
