Gano and Krull (2020) believed that when children pay attention to the sounds in nature, attempt to track down and identify what it is as it allows them to understand that space is three dimensional. By doing this, children are able to develop an inbuilt spirit of inquisitiveness and adventure of doing which can lay the ground work for accumulation of complex skills later in life. 

 

Pauline Oliveros's TEDx talk on "The difference between hearing and listening". She highlighted the important of deep listening with consciousness. It's so tempting that we forget the value of listening and instead prefer to keep talking. We encounter so many various sounds and noises daily that we ignore them and continue to move forward as if nothing has happened such as the sounds of motors and birds, footsteps, the rustling leave.

 

As future educator, therefore, I will integrate listening practice ranging from music activities, sound, musical instruments, and variety of sound indoor and outdoor space in my daily teachin so that children get more access with different kind of sounds. By doing so, children could develop more sensitive, sharp response to many kinds of sound from deeply listening to express their feeling, emotion as well as creativity.

 

This reminds me of Mutton Bird video, when artistic elements (lightning, sound, space, body movement) are utilized to emphasize the dancers in the mutton bird costume. Through a few motions, they were able to deliver message, storytelling to the audience. I wonder how children can manipulate natural materials in their learning. According to Creative dance for Early Childhood, children have the capacity to perform movement activities by their own, different stimulus prompt enables children to explore and experiment through dance-play. I can relate this to my experience, as I unleashed a lot of imagination and creativity with different perspective.

 

As Wilson stated that “It’s through play that they develop a sense of competence and make invaluable discoveries about their social, cultural, and physical environments.  It’s discovered through play.” These are qualities that are necessary for a life-long span. I believe that when children are given free space and time to have creative play in natural settings, they are able to express their ideas, emotion as well as improve other complex skills such as collaboration, negotiation, sharing and cooperation skill. 

 

In my future practice, I will carefully consider the material that I will provide to children in their playing. I will incorporate open-ended material that can be used both indoor and outdoor such as cones, rocks, blocks, sticks, ect. Which enable them to manipulate these materials based on their imagination, creativity, and curiosity. Furthermore, I will facilitate children to utilize all their body movement, multidisciplinary senses, sound sending ability to maximize their potential in exploring, investigating, experimenting their natural environment and surrounding.

Mirriam- Rose stated "Dadirri is inner, deep listening and quiet, still awareness. The deep spring that is inside us. We call on it and it calls to us.”  In a rush modern life where we have to make quick decision, people tend to ignore, overlook the strength of truly listening. It brings us calmness, inner-soul strength to listen, to watch, to wait and then to act. 

 

With the awareness of this, I put more emphasize in fostering nature-based learning to children which children get the most exposure as possible with natural environment, elements, non-structured spaces. By doing this, I believe children will be at risk for never developing attitude of respecting and caring to the environments if we adults do not offer opportunity for them to explore to understand our inextricable relationship with the environment in the very first few years.
