Teachers were paid around 6 dollars a month and that is equivalent to 200 dollars a day. Most schools were in New England. At first only men could go to school with only one room. Students only attended a few weeks out of the year. In spring, summer, and fall helped their families working on the fields. Yeomen poor farmers had no access to education. Slaves could not read or write due to the increase of slaves in places like South Carolina to work with the cotton gin.
