Mathilde is a selfless person. The author made it clear that Mathilde is selfless when “suddenly someone started crying. From a few seats back and to my right… She flew up the aisle and out the door. She wouldn’t be back in… I ran into the hall way…” (Lafleur page 53). Another selfless thing she did was “I— There’s a mistake… If only one student has passed, it must be… it would have to be Megs, not me” (Lafleur page 57). Because of the actions that Mathilde has done, it’s clear to the reader that Mathilde is a selfless person.

Quote: “Mathilde. We will always be friends. Always…” (Lafleur 71)

Inference: I can infer that Megs wants Mathilde to know that they will always be friends no matter where they take her. Instead of trying to make Mathilde even more sorrowful, she tries to comfort her.

Strong Thoughts: I know how Mathilde feels, Mathilde feels like she’s loosing everything from her life. Although I didn’t really loose much, I also felt like I was loosing my family’s and friends’ love and support which means a lot to me. I believe all kinds of people need a positive and supportive friend like Megs.

The story takes place in two places. The first place is Lykkelig. Lykkelig is Mathilde’s hometown, in Lykkelig Mathilde’s family and friend live there. In This little town there’s snow all over, they do not have a lot of food, and the town is not wealthy. Because there’s a war, Lykkelig is surrounded by rubble, dust, and ash. The second place is Faetre. Faetre is where Mathilde was taken to because of the test she passed, Faetre is nothing like where Mathilde used to live, in Faetre there is healthy green grass, and healthy green trees, they also do not have have any rubble, dust, and ash, they have a lot of food and money. It is also a hidden military base, but the people in charge of it takes the students that pass the test there to make it seem like a school.
