Today was very intense and also touching.

I experienced the different facets of the culture from the local people. It was revealed that although everyone has culture and while all people are born into different cultures they are not born with culture. So it is something we learn … moreover culture is something special that is brought together by the different people to create something new that describes and defines their way of life and that also developes further over time. How exciting!

Freedom is a food for wich the stomach of the negros is not prepared.“ Napoleon Bonaparte

These words express all the arrogance of the white European. Napoleon is history now, but the meaning of his words are still alive, just like the wounds they left behind. The hundreds of years, the Slavery exists, were some of the darkest times in human history. From Africa to North America, from the Caribean Islands to Southamerica, millions of people suffered from it. These times are over now but the history of nearly every black people in the western hemisphere starts with the slavery. They all have a dark past in their families. So it is also more impressive to be able to get in touch with the colorful and lively culture of the locals. It's almost ironic that something so beautiful could emerge from this terrible piece of human history. Like a life-affirming ray of sunshine, the culture of the black people tried then and now to drive away the shadows of the past.

Tim

I had never think about how terrible it was and what kind of pain people had to endure here.

How different cultures are intertwined here! So colorful, bright, different patterns and shapes, big and small things... Getting to know the culture of other nations it also enriches us.

Going back in history and knowing about the past encourages us to think. What would change if you changed history? We cannot change it, but we can learn a lot from what has already happened. It is knowledge that cannot be taken away from us, but we can pass it on to future generations. Such history lessons always bring us back to reality, they are very important. We learn ourselves and teach others!
