After finding a shaft that was eight meters deep, the team worked for an entire week just taking out the sand before making it to the sarcophagus.

The next step the researchers' took was to do a chemical analysis on the teeth that were found. This came back to show that roughly two thirds of the soldiers found in the grave were not Greek. Greeks did not reveal that they paid foreigners to fight in their armies. This perhaps could be due to their culture's high opinion of themselves and they did not want to admit that they needed help. After the Battle of Himera, the Greeks took more care of the Greek born warriors and had fewer people per grave. In contrast, foreigners were cramped into graves and had no burial objects with them.
