This article discusses Anthropologist Tina Lasisi and her ongoing research about the evolution of human hair. Something that prompted this interest was that humans are the only known mammals to have tight, curly hair. The article noted that categories associated with race typically are not studied, so there is not much research on this topic. Lasisi is still continuing her research, but some of her initial research indicated that curly hair helps protect against solar radiation and release heat when in dry environments. I am curious to learn more about the results of her research and whether there is some sort of evolutionary reason that humans have different types of hair.

Mercenaries Were More Common in Greek Warfare Than Ancient Historians Let on

The article "Mercenaries were more Common in Greek Warfare Than Ancient Historians Let On" is about how Greek armies mainly relied on mercenaries from other places. One piece of evidence that has supported researchers' theory is that DNA testing was done on 54 skeletons who were found in mass graves. The next step the researchers' took was to do a chemical analysis on the teeth that were found. This came back to show that roughly two thirds of the soldiers found in the grave were not Greek. Greeks did not reveal that they paid foreigners to fight in their armies. This perhaps could be due to their culture's high opinion of themselves and they did not want to admit that they needed help. After the Battle of Himera, the Greeks took more care of the Greek born warriors and had fewer people per grave. In contrast, foreigners were cramped into graves and had no burial objects with them.

Katlyn Fernandez

This article speaks about how our skin's relationship with the sun has changed over the centuries. A biological anthropologist discusses the reasons why this has occurred. An example touched on that stood out to me are our evolution from hunting and gathering ways of living, to indoor factorial more stationary ways of life. Moreover, the anthropologist discusses how as humans have created ways for sun protection, such as sunblock or umbrellas, they have also evolved into acts of privilege viewing lighter skin as more 'acceptable'.
