Question 1 What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

The poem's tone is strengthening a person's self-esteem because the hawk represents negativity and death, and the hawk harasses the narrator, but he will not allow death to affect him. His emotion is portrayed by a sample of the poem like, "I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable." It is very positive and it shows the reader taking a stand in his life and being humble.

Question 6 What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of the poem shows that the reader lives a good life until the hawk comes along and starts to disrupt him by screaming and hawking. Still, he screams his happiness so the world can hear he is unfazed by the hawk. The line that contains imagery of the scream is, "I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world." Near the end, he is more aware of his death, and he believes he will go out to live with nature after he is buried. "I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love"

Question 3 What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

The poet uses the hawk as a form of predator vs prey and conveys this message by, "it coaxes me to the vapor and the dusk". The poet also uses the image of, "I sound my barbaric yawp" to enforce the idea of the hawk being hostile.

Question 8 How important is the contribution of form, such as rhyme scheme and line arrangement? How does form influence the overall effect of the poem?

I believe the poet uses short stanzas to reference the short fights that a hawk will take. "The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me", is a reference to the time a hawk uses to swoop on its victim's is short and sweat in the eyes of a hawk. The form also increases the effect of the poem by allowing the reader to get a feeling of being in flight as the hawk.
