Developed by Atkinson and Shiffrin this model presents the durations of each linear store along with their size, going from a near infinite amount for the Sensory register however only lasts for less than a second, this could be averted by focusing on the sensation such as what someone is saying, Moving it to the STM, (Short term memory) this memory store can hold items for 30 seconds and can hold from 5 to 9 items at a time, this is where Shonda would likely hold her partners mobile number, however due to it being too long to truly remember it she must first move it to her LTM (long term memory) through maintence rehearsal this allows her to get the 11 digits all together by repeating the number multiple times to move the numbers from STM to LTM.

The long term memory is coded semantically and has a duration of forever with an infinite capacity.

On there other hand, Shonda could overpass this by putting the number into chunks.

The MSM comprises of the sensory register, short term memory and long term memory. information is stored in the sensory register however once it is paid attention to it moves into the short term memory. the short term memory has a capacity of 7+/-2 and duration is around 18 - 30 seconds. once the information is repeated through maintenance rehearsal it moves to the long term memory. in Shonda's case, she can hold the information in her short term memory because it is only a 4 digit code and because she enters the code almost all the time when she uses her phone, she goes through the maintenance rehearsal process and the 4 digit code has now moved to her long term memory. however when it comes to the phone number its a larger amount of digits so harder to store in the short term memory, and since phones usually save the number one time, she is very unlikely to go through maintenance rehearsal with the phone number and therefore doesnt allow the number to enter her long term memory

In this sensory register it has iconic memory which codes visual information and it has echoic memory which codes acoustic information. The next part is short term memory which has a capacity of 7 plus or minus 2 items and it has a duration of 18 to 30 seconds. It has long term memory which has an infinite duration and an almost endless capacity. In order to get long term memory it has to be rehearsed from the stm.

The Multi-store model of memory was created by Atkinson and Shiffrin. They recognised memory as having three unitary stores: the sensory store, STM (Short-term memory) and LTM (Long-term memory). The sensory store collects the information from the senses. If attention is paid to this information it transfers to our STM. In our STM information is held for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds we either forget this information or, through maintenance rehearsal, transfer it to our LTM where it can be stored for potentially forever.

LTM has a much larger duration and capacity than the STM. Atkinson and Shiffrin model presents duration of each linear store along with their size through the sensory register, STM,LTM. STM last around 30 seconds and has a 7+-2 which means it can take 5-9 items at a time.

AO1: The multi-store model was purposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin and is a structural model . They proposed that memory consisted of three stores which are the sensory register ,the short term memory and the long term memory. Memory is information from the STM transferred to the LTM only when the information is rehearsed after attention is paid to the individuals surroundings.

The Multi-Store Model of memory is a linear approach to explaining the development of memories, developed by Atkinson and Schiffrin. It consists of three components. The first component is the sensory register, in which information enters our memory via our senses, and it is coded echoically (acoustically) and iconically (visually); it's duration is 250 milliseconds, and it's capacity is unlimited. The information is only transferred to our short-term memory when we pay attention to it. Our short-term memory is coded acoustically, and the capacity is 7 + or - 2 items, as shown through Shonda's ability to remember four-digit pin codes, but her inability to recall her partner's mobile number, which is 11 digits long, as it is outside of the short-term memory capacity range. The duration of short-term memory is 18-30 seconds. Shonda expectedly maintained the four-digit pin codes in the short-term memory through maintenance rehearsal, which is repeating information several times. Whereas, in order for Shonda to remember her partner's 11-digit mobile number, she must use elaborative rehearsal, which is attaching meaning to information, as information is coded semantically in the long-term memory. In long-term memory, the capacity is essentially unlimited and the duration is potentially up to a lifetime.

One limitation of the Multi-Store Model of memory is that it is a limited explanation of memory, as it doesn't take into account the different stores within short-term memory, as shown through case studies. For example, Shallice and Warrington conducted a case study of patient KF, who had severe amnesia, in which he was able to recall digits when he read them himself, but struggled to recall them when they were read out loud to him. This suggests that there is a separate visual and acoustic short-term memory store, in order to process visual and auditory information. Therefore, this reduces the external validity of the Multi-Store Model of memory. However, as this was a case study, it may not be representative of the general population, due to individual differences of people, thus these findings may not be generalisable to a wider population.

One strength of the Multi-Store Model of memory is that it has research support. For example, Peterson and Peterson found that after giving participants a trigram task, they concluded that the duration of short-term memory was 18-30seconds. Therefore, this increases the external validity of the Multi-Store Model of memory. However, as they used artificial tasks and stimuli, the information was meaningless to real-life accounts of memory, thus it lacks ecological validity.

PET: One strength of the multi-store model of memory is there is evidence basis that supports the idea of distinctive STM stores and LTM stores. For instance,The KF study showed damage to the brain during an accident. The study saw an impairment in his STM.This suggests that the locations are different and have different store.

A weakness of the MSM is some research into STM duration has low ecological validity, as the stimuli participants were asked to remember bear little resemblance to items learned in real life, e.g. Peterson and Peterson used nonsense trigrams such as ‘YXZ’ to investigate STM duration.

One limitation of the multi store memory model is that it is too simple. The msm doesn’t go into detail with ltm and stm. Whereas, Baddeley and Hitch who proposed the WMM found that they are more complicated.
