The style of dance originated in Ireland in the 18^th century. Back then, farmers used to perform this dance on markets and folk festivals. They danced to Irish folk music and wore special costumes.

In 1994 Irish Step Dance became famous all over the world when the stage show Riverdance was first performed at the Eurovision Song Contest. 

 

Even today Irish Step Dance is very popular. 
While traditional Irish Step Dance was only performed to Irish folk music, modern forms of Irish Step Dance are also performed to pop music.

There are public dance performances as well as competitions all over the world. Also in Germany, there are dance schools which offer Irish Step Dance classes.

 

Irish Step Dance has long been recognized for its beautiful dance costumes. Women usually wear colorful dresses with various patterns (unterschiedliche Muster). Often the traditional Irish colors of green and white as well as Irish symbols (e.g. a Celtic cross) are part of the costume.
While early dancers were usually barefoort, dancers today are wearing special hard shoes.
