This experience can greatly enrich my pedagogical practice as an English teacher, as it allows me to better understand the importance of the relationship between language and culture. By interviewing an American, I was able to see how they perceive their own culture and the Brazilian culture, which is extremely relevant for contextualizing language teaching and working on intercultural issues in the classroom. In addition, this activity reinforces the need to adopt a communicative approach, since it promotes the use of language in real and meaningful situations. Based on this, I can propose similar activities for my students, such as simulated interviews and debates about cultural differences, developing not only linguistic competence but also intercultural competence, which involves respect and empathy for other cultures. This reflection also makes it possible to discuss stereotypes and cultural identity, making lessons more critical and connected to students’ reality. Finally, bringing real-life experiences into the classroom increases students’ motivation and engagement, showing that learning English is also about understanding people and different ways of seeing the world.

A lesson plan is a detailed guide that the teacher creates to organize and direct the development of activities in the classroom. It includes objectives, content, methods, resources, and forms of assessment, ensuring that teaching is structured, efficient, and aligned with students’ needs. Additionally, a lesson plan helps the teacher manage time and the sequence of activities, promoting a more productive learning environment. In this way, creating and revising a lesson plan has greatly helped me rethink my practice, making it more flexible and less rigid.

I can use number bingo to practice listening and number recognition in English in a fun way. Create bingo cards with numbers (for example, from 1 to 50) and distribute them to students. During the activity, say the numbers in English out loud or use them in contextualized sentences (I have 23 apples), and students mark the number on their cards when they hear it. The winner is the one who completes a row, column, or the entire card. This activity helps with pronunciation, listening comprehension, and number retention, and can be used as a warm-up, review, or lesson wrap-up.

I can promote practical activities, such as conversations, games, and group projects, that encourage the exchange of ideas and spontaneous use of the language. I believe that a welcoming environment, where students feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them, can help develop the confidence needed to express themselves both orally and in writing. In this way, I can prioritize effective communication and understanding over strict correction of isolated grammar.

The Aquarium activity can be a very effective tool to practice listening and speaking skills in English classes. In this activity, a small group of students talks or discusses a topic inside an inner circle (the “aquarium”), while the rest of the class observes from around. After some time, the observers can give feedback on vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and communication strategies used, as well as ask questions. This dynamic encourages active participation, improves argumentation skills, and helps students develop confidence to express themselves orally in English, while allowing everyone to learn both as participants and as observers.

By looking for foods or drinks that start with the same letter as their own name, students practice vocabulary related to food and beverages, reinforce the association between sounds and letters, and develop correct pronunciation. Additionally, the activity promotes attention and concentration since students need to understand and apply the rule during the game. The aspect of discovering the rule also fosters critical thinking and interaction among peers, strengthening oral communication and teamwork. In this way, the activity contributes to the development of language skills in a fun and motivating manner.

Instead of spending time correcting everything in class, the teacher can use the chat to give quick feedback and answer questions anytime. It would be very interesting if, in Brazil, we could start thinking about using PBIS to improve our schools as well.

In the pre-reading stage, I try to activate their prior knowledge, introduce important vocabulary, and create curiosity to better prepare them for understanding the text. During reading, I focus on helping students build meaning by using strategies that aid comprehension, such as making inferences and identifying main ideas. In post-reading, I encourage reflection on the content, propose oral or written activities to reinforce learning, and stimulate the application of what was read in real-life contexts. Incorporating this sequence into my lessons makes reading more engaging and effective, while also developing my students’ language and cognitive skills. With this practice, I feel I can better meet their needs and promote more meaningful and lasting learning.

Using gestures, facial expressions, and movements makes lessons more dynamic, reduces language barriers, and creates meaningful learning contexts.Incorporating nonverbal language activities into my English classes can make learning more engaging and effective. Activities such as charades help students practice vocabulary through gestures, while games like Simon Says reinforce action verbs in a fun and interactive way. Using facial expressions to teach feelings allows students to associate emotions with words, and storytelling with gestures makes comprehension more meaningful. Role-play with silent acting encourages creativity and builds confidence before students use spoken language. By including these strategies, I create a dynamic learning environment that supports understanding, reduces anxiety, and motivates students to actively participate in the learning process.

Knowing how well I master the language and understand learning processes helps me plan more effective and engaging lessons. Developing my teaching skills allows me to create activities that truly involve my students, while improving my ability to communicate and connect with them makes the classroom environment more welcoming and motivating.

The book The Courage to Teach by Parker J. Palmer is fundamental to my teaching practice because it proposes an approach that goes beyond teaching techniques and focuses on the educator’s identity and integrity. Palmer argues that effective teaching cannot be reduced to methods or strategies; it emerges from the teacher’s “self,” where my intellect, emotions, and spirit come together, allowing authentic encounters between me, my students, and the content.

As a teacher, this book helps me in several ways:

Self-Knowledge and Reflection: By exploring my own identity and values, I can align my teaching practice with my deepest beliefs, promoting a more authentic and meaningful teaching.

Building Community: Palmer emphasizes the importance of creating a “community of truth” in the classroom, where everyone feels safe to express their ideas and feelings, fostering a collaborative and respectful learning environment.

Facing Fear: The author discusses how fear can undermine teaching and learning. By recognizing and confronting these fears, I am able to create a more open and receptive environment for learning.

Embracing Paradox: Palmer suggests that instead of seeking simple solutions to the complexities of teaching, I should embrace the paradoxes it presents, such as the tension between control and freedom, or between authority and vulnerability, using them as opportunities for my growth and professional development.

By integrating Palmer’s principles into my practice, I cultivate a more mindful, compassionate, and effective teaching that not only conveys knowledge but also inspires and transforms my students.

Understanding concepts such as automaticity allows me to plan activities that encourage constant practice, helping students develop fluency and use the language naturally. Understanding transfer helps me identify which aspects of students’ first language can facilitate or hinder learning, enabling more effective interventions.

Furthermore, recognizing the importance of reward motivates me to create a positive environment with constant feedback that values students’ effort, increasing their engagement and self-esteem. By understanding self-regulation, I can teach strategies that promote student autonomy, encouraging them to manage their own learning process.

Reflecting on identity and investment helps me design activities that value students’ culture and individual experiences, strengthening their motivation and sense of belonging. Valuing interactions in class encourages real communication among students, favoring the development of language skills. Incorporating cultural aspects into lessons makes learning more meaningful and contextualized since language and culture are inseparable.

Finally, understanding the concept of agency leads me to promote active student participation in decisions about their learning, increasing their autonomy and protagonism. Understanding the evolution of these approaches allows me to grasp the contexts in which each method emerged and the reasons they were adopted, which helps me appreciate their contributions and avoid repeating past mistakes.
